Whether you choose to call it the "Storm of the Century" or the "Superstorm of 1993," most Georgians will know exactly what you are referencing if you use either phrase. In 1993, a storm hit Georgia that was so powerful....so complex...that it baffled both meteorologists and residents of the state alike. Take a look at why the largest blizzard in Georgia that took place in March 1993 became a significant part of Georgia's history.
In 1993, a storm of magnanimous proportions hit the United States when they least expected it.
On Tuesday of that week, skies were blue and the sun was shining a gorgeous 75 degrees.
But the following Saturday, a ferocious blizzard hit, dropping more than 20 inches of snow and killing more than 300 people.
School and travel were shut down for days following this unexpected storm.
People began referring to this disaster of a storm as a "snowicane" because of the intense drop in pressure and potent jet stream of air.
The residents of Georgia were left with a mess for days, but also a mark on the state's history for years to come.
It was one of the worst storms in Georgia history and one that residents still talk about to this day.
