There's something to be said for the healing power of nature. Whether you're stressed out about work or something is weighing on you that's difficult to share with others, you can always find comfort or at least a temporary escape in the beauty and tranquility of nature. This state park in Southwest Florida has been providing a relaxing getaway for nature-lovers for nearly 80 years.
Hillsborough River State Park covers nearly 3,000 acres of wild Florida landscape and features over seven miles of scenic trails.
Although it feels like you've entered another world, this beautiful natural oasis is actually only a 30-minute drive from Tampa.
This area is special, as it's one of the few places in Florida to find rapids (up to Class II).
These rapids make absolutely beautiful scenery to enjoy while hiking or as a focus for nature photography.
The park was founded in 1938 as one of the first state parks in Florida, and this history can be seen in some of the Civilian Conservation Corps structures.
Here you will find plenty of boardwalks and paths through this exceptional landscape and a suspension bridge that takes you through the tree canopy.
The park is also home to a replica of a Second Seminole War-era fort. Fort Foster can only be explored by taking one of the tours, available only at certain times during weekends.
Visitors are also encouraged to enjoy fishing, camping, and swimming (in the on-site pool).
Hillsborough River State Park is open year-round from 8:00 a.m. to sundown and cost of admission is $6 per carload.
Hillsborough River State Park is located at 15402 US-301, Thonotosassa, FL 33592.
Ranger-led tours of Fort Foster take place on the first and third Saturday of each month at 2 p.m. and the first and third Sunday of each month at 11 a.m. and cost $2 per person.
