Every year, Dr. Beach, one of the most popular beach experts in the world, puts out a list of the Top 10 Beaches in the Country. His real name is Dr. Stephen Leatherman, and he is an FIU professor and the director of the university's Laboratory for Coastal Research.
The list for 2016 was just released, and we're thrilled to announce that Florida beaches hold, not one, but THREE of the top 10 spots. The three beaches that made the list were Siesta Beach at #2, Grayton Beach at #6, and Caladesi Island at #9. These are truly three of the most beautiful beaches in Florida, and we write about them often here at Only in Florida. If that's not enough to convince you to add these beaches to your bucket list, we think the photos below will do the trick.
Siesta Beach:
Siesta Beach, sometimes called Siesta Key Beach, is located in Southwest Florida near Sarasota. It has some of the finest white sand in the world. Because this sand is 99% pure quartz, it stays nice and cool, even on the hottest days. Last year, it was voted the #1 Beach in the U.S. by TripAdvisor.
Grayton Beach State Park:
This beach in the Panhandle, between Destin and Panama City Beach, has stayed undeveloped and well preserved due to its protection as a state park. It's famous for its emerald waters and white sugar sand. Not only can you spend time at one of the most beautiful beaches in America, the nearby artist colony of the same name is an awesomely funky, free-spirited Florida beach town.
Caladesi Island State Park:
This gorgeous all-natural beach is located near Dunedin. You can access the beach via ferry from Honeymoon Island or by walking (the somewhat long trek) from Clearwater Beach. Due to its unspoiled coastline, this beach is teeming with thriving wildlife. The soft white sand is dotted with sea grass and shells, and the water is an incredibly clear, bright turquoise. It's perfect for those who really want to get away from it all and relax in nature.
Have you visited any of these beaches? What's your favorite beach in Florida and why?
