Oh, the weather outside is frightful... and this weekend, we're supposed to get a blast of arctic air! Way to kick off December, Delaware! If we wanted to live in a frozen tundra, we'd all move to the North Pole, right? Well, a few times a year, the First State turns into a winter wonderland and does begin to feel like the North Pole - and some spots are particularly good at showing off the beauty of winter in Delaware. Check them out below.

1. Brandywine Creek State Park, Wilmington

You might not expect an urban state park like Brandywine Creek to be first on our list of Delaware winter spots, but when the sunlight hits the snowy trees and the creek just right, and if you get there before the snow has been disturbed, it is a majestic sight.

2. Cape Henlopen State Park, Lewes

Cape Henlopen's dunes gather snow and turn into snow-capped peaks, and the variety of winter birds that call the Cape their home only add to the feeling of an isolated, snowy winter in Delaware.

3. Snow in and around Rehoboth Beach, DE

For the more social elves, Rehoboth Beach is the closest thing to the North Pole in Delaware - but it won't leave you in a barren wasteland. The North Pole charm continues from the snow covered beach and boardwalk into the beautiful downtown area that's lit up and festive all winter long.

4. Lewes

All of the beaches in and around Lewes are breathtaking when they're covered in snow, and it seems to stretch on for miles and miles. With incredible views, this whole area of Delaware becomes a true winter wonderland.

5. University of Delaware Campus, Newark

If you manage to tune out grumbling UD students trudging through the snow on their way to class, the green at the University of Delaware begins to look like a winter paradise. The historic brick buildings add to the charm - you can almost imagine Santa's elves learning the ins and outs of toymaking in each classroom.

6. Downtown Dover

Dover comes alive in winter, so you can imagine it as the urban center of our Delaware North Pole scenery. With one of the most charming downtowns in all of the state, the Christmas lights add to the scene when snow begins to fall.

7. White Clay Creek State Park, Newark

White Clay Creek is my favorite winter hike in Delaware, for obvious reasons if you look at the above photo. The creek is icy, the trees are snow-covered, and it is quiet, isolated, and serene. What a breathtaking view of winter in Delaware.

To me, winter in Delaware is the most wonderful time of the year. Strolling on the sand in below-freezing weather or spotting snow-capped dunes is my ideal afternoon, but I understand that not everyone feels the same way.
