Delaware's coast is one of the defining features of the First State. From the inland bays to the Delaware Bay coast and all the way down to the Atlantic, much of our history and culture comes from the water! To see one of the coolest natural wonders along the coast, head to Cape Henlopen and check out the massive sand dunes. These dunes are an important part of the seaside ecosystem, and they stretch for miles.
Cape Henlopen is one of Delaware's natural wonders, and it's a popular spot for sunbathing, swimming, boating, and even walking all year long.
The cape has a lot of history behind it, and the State of Delaware has preserved the area by designating it as a state park.
The rolling dunes that make up the cape and surrounding acreage are a defining trait of Sussex County - and these dunes are some of the biggest on the East Coast!
The dunes serve an important purpose, as they protect against erosion from high water and storm surges and provide nesting areas for shorebirds and other seaside critters.
Most of the dunes along the shoreline are ecologically fragile, and you'll want to keep off. Within Cape Henlopen State Park, though, the Walking Dune trail lets you experience this unique ecosystem up close.
From the top of these enormous, rolling dunes, you can see for miles! Try to spot Fort Miles Historic Area and the Fire Control Towers from World War II that line the coast.
No matter what season it is, spending a day in Cape Henlopen State Park and exploring the dunes is sure to give you a new appreciation for the scenic natural wonders found here in the First State.
Check out a map of Cape Henlopen State Park here and plan your visit to see it! The park is open year-round, and it's beautiful in every season.
