White Clay Creek State Park might be Delaware's best kept secret. It's just steps away from the University of Delaware campus, yet many students don't even know that it exists. The park extends into Pennsylvania and Maryland, and trails continue for miles and miles. Hiking through White Clay Creek can take you as long as you'd like, and once you're through the most scenic parts of the trail, you'll return to your car at the end of a long day feeling accomplished and excited about nature. With all that White Clay Creek has to offer, it might be the best hike in Delaware.
There are wooden and steel truss bridges throughout the park that provide beautiful views of the creek below.
Walking alongside the creek is an option, too, and you will enjoy hearing the sound of rushing water as you take in the scenery.
The creek is fun to splash around in on a warm day - I know that my dog loves to get his paws wet!
And while some parts of the trail are filled with hikers and excitement, others still are silent and serene.
White Clay Creek is popular for mountain bikers, too, and even if you are new to biking, you will find trails that you love.
The best time to visit White Clay Creek is in the spring, before the heat gets to be too much, and as all of the beautiful plants begin to bloom.
The Middle Run Natural Area is my favorite set of trails to hike! Combine the Lenape Trail with Snow Goose and Possum Hollow to get your miles in.
Click here to print out a trail map of the park. You can find the main park office at 750 Thompson Station Road, Newark, DE. From there, Rangers can direct you to the best trails to hike on that particular day.
Of course, there are great hiking spots all over the state! Check out our Delaware Hiking Bucket List if you're looking for more to add to your plans this summer. Don't forget good socks and lots of water!
