In 1955, socialite Marjorie Merriweather Post bought Hillwood Estate. Filling her home with art and antiques, Ms. Post, eventually decided to turn her home into a museum to inspire and educate the public. Visitors can now explore the home, learn about the fascinating history of Marjorie Post and enjoy the gorgeous gardens.

The mansion itself is decorated in the 18th century French style that Marjorie Post adored when she lived there.

Each room has a mix of memorabilia and museum quality objects so visitors can learn about Marjorie Post and about the time period when she lived.

Hillwood has one of the biggest collections of Russian imperial art outside of Russia still on display in the home.

One of Marjorie Post’s favorite pieces of her Russian art collection were the gorgeous Fabergé pieces she collected, including the famous Catherine the Great Easter Egg.

There are 90 Faberge pieces in the collection at Hillwood and they are a popular attraction in the museum.

The crowning glory of the estate may be the 25 acres of gardens surrounding the estate.

The gardens are split into different “rooms” which are meant to compliment the mansion’s interior spaces.

You can stroll through the Japanese Garden, the Friendship walk, the French parterre, the rose garden and many more. They also offer audio tours or a docent can be your guide to teach you about the different flowers and plants. The gardens are open year-round.
