Looking for a place where you can get away from it all, but still be able to return in time for dinner if needed? Cedar Hill State Park is surprisingly close, yet feels like a lifetime away from the hustle-and-bustle of the city and the activities that seem to overload our time. It's only 20 miles from downtown Dallas and 30 miles from Fort Worth! As if swimming, fishing, hiking, and exploring isn't enough, this state park even features a farm so visitors can learn about their agricultural history! Here's what to look forward to when you visit:
Cedar Hill State Park encompasses 1,826 acres and is located on the banks of the 7,500-acre Joe Pool Lake.
The park opened in 1991.
Settlers came here for the rich soils and grasses of the tallgrass blackland prairie.
It was named for its rugged limestone bluffs and dark green cedars.
The park includes the Penn Farm Agricultural Center, where the family worked and lived for over a century.
The center is open daily and visitors can take a self-guided tour to see how farming has changed over the past century.
There are buildings to explore - like this banyard - and plenty of farm equipment on the grounds.
Joe Pool Lake offers an abundance of water sports.
Two four-lane boat ramps and lighted boat trailer parking are located on grounds. The marina is currently closed for the season, but we can't wait for it to open back up in Spring!
The lake is known for its largemouth black bass, crappie, and catfish.
Two lighted fishing jetties and a perch pond for kids add to the experience. You do not need a fishing license to fish from shore or a pier in a state park!
Bike or hike? Either way, there are over 1,200 acres to explore.
Trails are closed when wet, so be sure to check the forecast and call ahead when in doubt.
Trails are well maintained here.
The park offers quiet respites from city life.
The scenery is breathtaking from sunrise...
...to sunset!
There are great Texas landscapes to take in.
The area has an abundance of birds, insects, and native flowers.
There are beautiful walkways to explore...
...such as this elongated path over Texas marshlands.
