Wander through a picturesque landscape and admire gorgeous architecture at Topsmead State Forest. If you love experiencing bygone eras, this is the perfect place to go. The stunning estate once belonged to Miss Edith Morton Chase, an inspiring Connecticut businesswoman. Today, visitors can tour the Tudor Revival country estate house and explore the peaceful grounds.
Topsmead State Forest sits on 615 acres in Litchfield Hills. Everywhere you turn, you'll be met with enchanting views.
The home was originally constructed in 1929. When Miss Edith Morton Chase passed away in 1972, she left her cherished summer home to the state of Connecticut.
In her will, Miss Edith Morton Chase wished for the grounds to "be kept in a state of natural beauty." So when you stroll through this tranquil area, you know it looks just as it did when she left it.
The surrounding area is home to gorgeous hiking paths and picnic areas. You'll love exploring the gardens and looking for vibrant birds and butterflies.
For a quick and breezy hike, explore the nearby the Edith M. Chase Ecology Trail. The entire pathway is only 7/10 mile, so it's perfect for a mid-afternoon stroll.
You can even take a free guided tour through the historic home!
Tours are offered on the 2nd and 4th weekends of each month between June and October. No reservations are required. To learn more about guided tours, click here.
