Every beach is unique and, at Silver Sands State Park, it's not just about feeling the sand between your toes and splashing in the water. This piece of coastline, and the island off of it, are absolutely magical. The best part is that admission is free so you can visit this spot all summer long without emptying your wallet. Silver Sands State Park is unique because it features history, folklore, fun activities and multiple habitats. Outdoor explorers will love the nature that surrounds them here, from the rocky shoreline...
To the grasslands and marshes. But it doesn't end there. There's fines, salt marsh, and woods too. Start packing that picnic basket now because you're definitely going to want to spend the day here.
But of all the trails you can take, following the boardwalk is the easiest. Avoid rough terrains and wet shoes by taking this wooded walkway to the pier and back. Along the way you'll find small enclaves with benches to catch your breath. It's super romantic at sunset as well and has been the sight to many a proposal.
When you get to the pier you can do some fishing, but the seemingly endless ocean isn't the most intriguing view.
You may also notice an island off in the distance. It's said to be the burying ground of Captain Kidd's treasure, which dates back to 1699. But would you believe me if I told you that you could actually walk to it?
It's true! The barge reveals itself at low tide and makes it possible for you to actually walk across the ocean. You're free to treasure hunt, though must come for the bird sanctuary that now inhabits the island. But be careful- if you don't make it back before the tide returns you'll be trapped on an island cursed by pirates. So be careful!
Silver Sands State Park is located at 1 Silver Sands Parkway, Milford, Connecticut 06460. The park is open year-round from 8 am to sunset. For another unique spot check out Walnut Beach.
