Some states have vast quantities of uninhabited land. That's not true of Connecticut. We're among the smallest states, but we're also one of the most densely-populated. It can be tough to find a place that's not overrun with people, especially during popular travel seasons. If you feel like you need to get away to somewhere remote in Connecticut, there are few places better than the Iron Trail near Canaan Mountain. This lovely trail will get you deep into the woods in a peacefully secluded area that's unlike anywhere else in the state. There aren't very many places you can find here that are this remote and tranquil!
The trail spans just under eight miles, so it may be a little challenging for inexperienced hikers.
It's an out-and-back trail, so you can always just hike part of the way if you don't feel up to the entire trek. The middle of the trail is the most difficult, with some elevation gain and a few scrambles, so stick to the end points if you're looking for an easier challenge.
There's nothing like the peace you'll find in an uninhabited area
The woods you'll walk through are gorgeous and look almost primeval: it's easy to forget what a crowded place Connecticut is when you are somewhere with so much natural beauty!
The trail features great variety and you'll see some lovely open spaces, too.
Many don't think to go hiking in the winter, but the scenery here is amazing even in the coldest months.
This isolated trail in Connecticut is the perfect place to go when you're feeling stressed and overloaded.
The Iron Trail is located in the Housatonic State Forest, near the Canaan Mountain Natural Area Preserve. The Connecticut Forest and Park Association has information on where to locate the trailheads.
