Now that the weather is finally getting warm in Connecticut, you and the family will want to start spending more time outside enjoying the sunshine. Lighthouse Point Park is practically bursting with activities for the entire family.
Lighthouse Point Park is a shoreline gem for families in New Haven. Located right on the Long Island Sound, it's a destination for beachgoers but it's also so much more.
The sandy beach is a favorite spot for strolling during the off-season. Once the weather warms, families enjoy splashing around in the Sound to cool down.
Right off the beach is a playground for the kids. With plenty of slides and climbing equipment, active children will find this a fantastic place to burn off some energy.
Lighthouse Point Park also has open green space. Grills and picnic tables make it a breeze to stay at the park for a long day and enjoy lunch or dinner under the open sky.
One of the park's jewels is the historic lighthouse. Although the lighthouse was only lit for 73 years, the stone tower still stands guard over the shoreline.
The lighthouse isn't the only historical feature of the park. The carousel is authentic from the early 1900s and one of just around 100 still in operation today. For 50 cents you can ride one of the horses on the weekends from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
The park is open daily year-round from 7 a.m. - sunset. The splash pad, carousel and summer concession stand are only open seasonally during the summer.

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L. Why I Love It: Fact: Airplanes are notoriously dry, dry, dry. No matter how much water I drink both before and during the flight, I always find myself in a hydration deficit for days. New England is known all across the country for its amazing fall foliage, and you'll find no shortage of things to do in Connecticut in the fall. From pumpkin patches to apple picking, there's an endless array of wonder on display in the Nutmeg State when autumn rolls around, but one of the most popular activities is undoubtedly leaf peeping. One of our favorite places to observe the changing leaves in Connecticut is the beautiful Hidden Valley Preserve in Washington, CT. This gem of a park offers up some amazing trails that are perfect for exploring, and there's a lot to see here, especially if you visit at fall's peak.
Hidden Valley Preserve is managed by the Steep Rock Association, a land trust that conserves more than 5,700 acres in Connecticut. The 940-acre Hidden Valley Preserve is just one of five preserves managed by the organization, but its magnificent scenery and great hiking opportunities make it one of the most popular with the public.
Throughout the park, you'll find quotes from Henry David Thoreau, one of New England's favorite sons. The naturalist and writer spent much of his life in the New England region and famously sequestered himself away in a cabin on Walden Pond in Concord, Massachusetts for more than two years.
A visit here is amazing at any time of year - the preserve's meadows, overlooks, and water views are unparalleled. It's particularly amazing in the fall, though. The mixed forests result in a variety of shades that offer up brilliant reds, golds, and oranges throughout the fall season.
