We have so many great trails in Connecticut that it can be difficult to parse through them all. After all, there's only so much time that can be dedicated to hiking! We like to try to find trails with special features that make the hike really interesting. One such hike in Connecticut is the bridge trail at Lover's Leap State Park. This gorgeous trail isn't very long or very difficult, making it a great option for inexperienced hikers or those heading out with the whole family. Check it out:
Lover's Leap State Park is one of our favorite state parks in Connecticut. This 160-acre park in New Milford has miles of trails, ancient ruins, and plenty of legends.
There are rumors of all sorts of supernatural occurrences here, including hauntings, fairy circles, and more. Even the park's name has spooky origins. According to legend, the daughter of a local Native American chief married an English trader. He was delayed when returning from a trip, and she assumed he had abandoned her. Heartbroken, she jumped from a cliff to her death. Her husband returned and finding her gone, he leapt to death as well. Supposedly, if a proposal made here ends in rejection, the proposer will be driven to jump to his or her death.
Stories of the supernatural aside, this is an absolutely beautiful park. The easiest way to get a tour is to take the Lover's Leap Trail, a short 1.2-mile out-and-back trail that will give you a lovely view of the park.
It also just so happens to be one of our favorite bridge hikes in Connecticut! The bridge that spans the Housatonic here was made in 1895 by the local Berlin Iron Bridge company.
These views are absolutely magnificent. The main trail itself is pretty short, but there are plenty of side trails to go off on if you are looking for more of a challenge.
If you aren't interested in traversing the entire trail, you can always just take the quick 2-minute walk from the parking lot to the bridge.
The relatively low elevation gain and spectacular scenery make this a great option for hiking with kids.
