If you enjoy seeing wildlife in its natural habitat, Colorado is heaven on earth. Take any hiking trail, visit any city park, or stop by any beautiful lake, and you're likely to see a range of animals from elk to chipmunks to birds of prey. Every year, one little town is home to the most incredible migration you've ever seen, and you're going to want to check it out in person.
The Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge covers 14,800 acres near the little town of Monte Vista in the southern part of Colorado.
You'll find the refuge at 6120 CO-15, Monte Vista, CO 81144.
This idyllic place is a haven for all kinds of wildlife, including deer, elk, porcupines, beaver, and a host of bird species.
Every spring and fall, the most incredible migration takes place right here.
As many as 27,000 sandhill cranes stop by on their journey to the Gulf Coast. The fields of the refuge fill with birds!
The air is full of the sound of flapping wings and the distinct calls of the cranes...
...and you'll be able to witness the behavior and habits of these beautiful birds as they feed and rest up before their long journey toward warmer weather.
Sandhill cranes have been on the planet for a long time - the oldest confirmed fossil is over 2.5 million years old! These birds are both ungainly and majestic. If you've never seen a sandhill crane up close, you'll see what we mean when you visit.
The refuge is open every day from sunrise to sunset. When you visit, make sure to wear sturdy shoes and appropriate clothing for the weather. Bring your binoculars to watch the cranes up close, and your camera to capture this spectacle.
Have you seen the migration of the sandhill cranes at Monte Vista Wildlife Refuge? We'd love to see your photos!
