Finding Lizard Lake in the town of Marble is no easy task, and getting to it can be just as challenging. That’s the beauty of this hidden gem in Colorado, only those who are determined, get to witness it for themselves.
Are you one of them? If so, there are two ways to access this lake. The most well-known is the path along the Lead King Basin and Crystal Mill Loop. The rugged terrain is mostly suited for off-road vehicles, but you can certainly hike it if you choose to. If you plan to travel on foot, make sure you wear waterproof hiking boots. After heavy rains, the trail can be wet, slippery, and muddy in certain areas.
The historic Crystal Mill is the most visited spot along this trail, so it completely overshadows Lizard Lake. Which makes it even better for us because most off-roaders cruise pass by the lake without giving it a second thought. If you plan on taking this route, it will definitely be worth it to stop to see the mill too.
An easier way to access Lizard Lake is by simply driving along Crystal City Road (FSR #314), that meanders for about 4 miles along Crystal River. The unpaved dirt road leading to the 5-acre lake is narrow, steep, and rocky in various sections. Hikers might have a difficult time navigating this terrain. Whether you’re hiking or off-roading, the journey to the lake requires a bit of a trek. But the reward of seeing this breathtaking lake is worth all the efforts to get here.
While other explorers are busy four wheeling or enjoying Crystal Mill, it’s likely that you will have this lake to yourself. It’s nestled between Sheep Mountain and Hat Mountain. Moreover, you can also see gorgeous views of Whitehouse Mountain. With vistas like this, you’re going to want to pack a lunch and spend some time marveling at the breathtaking beauty. It’s especially pretty during the fall when the leaves are ablaze with the hues of the season. Fishing is allowed on the lake, so bring your rod and hang out for a bit.
Lizard Lake is a photographer's dream come true and a true definition of a hidden gem. So, if you don’t mind taking on the rugged terrain, this secret mountain lake in Colorado could become your new little hideaway.
