Tobogganing in Cleveland? Absolutely! As Northeast Ohio cools down, many locals prefer to retreat into the cozy comfort of their homes. While cozying up under a blanket does sound inviting, such inactivity can result in cabin fever. Clevelanders know this sickness all too well - the landscape appears gray and dull, and it feels there is nothing to do outdoors now that winter has arrived. Of course, this is a mere state of mind. The truth is that our landscape becomes a winter wonderland as temperatures drop and snow arrives, particularly in the eternally lovely Cleveland Metroparks.
As snow begins to fall, there's nothing quite like the icy thrill of rushing down a toboggan chute.
This super-speedy style of sledding hails from northern Canada, perfected by the Innu and Cree.
However, no snow is required for wintry fun at The Chalet in Mill Stream Run Reservation.
Typically, the underside of the toboggan rests directly on the snow, but such is a mere accessory at The Chalet.
These twin chutes are refrigerated, allowing them to operate from the day after Thanksgiving through the first weekend in March.
Operation is weather permitting, of course, but a lack of snow certainly won't slow you down. Open hours vary from month to month, so check the park website before you head out.
With an impressive 700 feet of chutes, The Chalet has become Clevelanders' go-to destination for wintertime fun.
Be prepared for a workout, though, as you'll have to climb 108 steps to reach the top of this snowy run! Don't forget to bring along a pair of gloves or mittens, as are required to ride. You'll be tightly gripping a handle and braving the cold wind during your descent.
You can purchase tickets for a single ride or an all-day pass. The latter option is obviously a fan favorite.
Remember to dress in layers, because you are sure to encounter some chilly temperatures as you climb up and zip down this epic wintertime slide.
The Cleveland Metroparks truly do become a winter wonderland as our region descends into the depths of the coolest season.
