While fall officially begins on the autumnal equinox, there's one pervading question each and every year: When do leaves change color in Cleveland? Will it be an early seasonal start, or will the leaves begin to rust later, perhaps even close to the equinox? The truth is, different meteorological factors are at play, but they've made predicting the color change almost like a science. Let's take a look at the fall foliage map from Smoky Mountains to see what's in store for 2023!

It's hard to miss Ohio on the map — it's the little heart-shaped shirt pocket in the Great Lakes region. We're normally part of the first great change in the Northern United States, so you'll soon be seeing bits of color all across the area.

By the week of September 11, we'll start to see the first early brushstrokes of Mother Nature's autumn equinox pallette.

Smoky Mountains seems to be spot on in their prediction, as I've already seen clusters of red on maple leaves in the area. Soon, however, a slightly expanded swatch of colors will be visible in Cleveland and directly on south.

The few following weeks will keep inching us closer and closer to peak color.

By the week of September 25, we'll start seeing a patchy or partial spread of color. At this point, the seasonal splendor will truly start to enchant you, as you'll see it everywhere in the region!

Peak leaf-peeping season comes around the week of October 9, so this is when you should be planning your outdoor adventures!

The week of October 2 is a good contender, too, if you want to start early, as leaves will be near peak in most places around Cleveland. However, colors will be absolutely bursting from the landscape around October 9, so this is the ideal time to head out and make the most of the season.

But just as spring flowers bloom and disappear too quickly, we'll be past peak foliage in no time.

Between October 16 and October 23, the region will surpass peak fall foliage season. At this point, leaves are dropping, and the bareness of early winter will slowly start to creep in.

One of the most magical places to view fall colors is in Lake View Cemetery.

While fall colors are at their peak, you have to check out Lake View Cemetery. It's a garden-style cemetery, which means its beautifully manicured grounds are rather like a park. During your visit, you're bound to see other casual hikers enjoying the grounds. Bring a picnic lunch if you're feeling up for it!

Wade Lagoon is another magical place to see the splendor of autumn.

I adore Wade Lagoon, and wholeheartedly recommend a visit in every season. Fall is one of its most stunning times of the year, as the clear blue waters of the lagoon catch and reflect the plentiful colors. While you're there, be sure to visit the Cleveland Museum of Art... it's free!

Of course, you must budget some time to check out the Cleveland Metroparks, too!

Rocky River Reservation has a history to it, as it was the first land in the Cleveland Metroparks. Beyond this, evidence of early human residents is abundant here, and ancient fossil fish have been found in the park. The history helps add to the sense of nostalgia in the park, as it feels warm and dream-like in the fall.

And if you swing by West Creek Reservation, you'll love the colors and stunning view of the Cleveland skyline.

Lookout Ridge Loop is the best way to see the changing leaves and the Cleveland skyline in one go. As it's just under a mile in length, it's an easy and dreamy hike!

Chapin Forest Reservation is another incredible way to see the Cleveland skyline surrounded by fall foliage.

As it is located on the only mountain in the Cleveland area, Chapin Forest offers views that'll knock your socks off. On a clear day, it almost feels like you can reach right out and touch the skyline!

If you don't mind a bit of a drive, hiking at Cuyahoga Valley National Park should be on your autumn to-do list.

As the only national park in Ohio, a trip to CVNP is always a treat. Its waterfalls are stunning when surrounded by foliage, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. You'll find charming lakes, mighty rivers, forested walkways, historic company towns, and more in this massive park.

Truthfully, autumn in Northeast Ohio is stunning no matter where you go.
