The Most Unusual Beach In Northern California Is Downright Fascinating
Bowling Ball Beach on the Mendocino Coast features unique spherical rock formations known as concretions, making it a fascinating spot for exploration and photography.
Tucked along the Mendocino Coast is a spectacular but unusual sight. Strange geologic spheres that are formed by a rare combination of elements are found here. Bowling Ball Beach, where you will find these curious rocks, is located in the Schooner Gulch State Beach area and will make for a fun day of exploration.

The so-called bowling balls are actually a geological phenomenon known as "concretion." It occurs when sedimentary rock is formed by a natural process where minerals cause grains of sand or stone to stick together into larger formations.

Visit the beach at sunset for a truly dramatic view.
These boulders are the result of millions of years of concretion and erosion, exposing the hard spheres as the mudstone of the cliffs receded around them.
You can find the trail to Bowling Ball Beach at mile marker 11.41 on Highway 1. It is about three miles south of Point Arena. You will see a sign saying "Park facing south only" where you can safely park your car on the west side of the road. The path that heads south leads to Schooner Gulch.
Recent reports from visitors to the area warn that you should be prepared to walk over rough, rocky surfaces and driftwood to see the beach.
Follow the trail along the bluff and then scramble down a dirt path to find Bowling Ball Beach. The trail and the stairs down the cliff have eroded considerably in the past few winters, so be careful.
Once you make it down to the beach covered with driftwood, turn so the ocean is on your left and walk north for about 5 minutes. If you timed it right with the tide, you will see the boulders.
Although it is pretty unusual to see, the same geological phenomenon that created Bowling Ball Beach is what created the extraordinary Moeraki Boulders and Koutu Boulders in New Zealand, the Cannonball River in North Dakota, and a few other formations like these throughout the world.
The history of this spot is pretty interesting. It was originally inhabited by the Central Pomo Indians. The area was frequented by Russians and native Alaskan hunters as early as 1812, and by Mexican land owners in the 1840s. John Galloway, a Scotsman, was the first recorded occupant of the area in 1866.

Whether you choose to drive, hike, or bike to Jackson Lake, you’ll find a lesser-known fall wonderland and a gorgeous spot to enjoy a seasonal picnic. The landscape surrounding the small lake puts on a simply beautiful display this time of year and it is less than two hours from Los Angeles. There are also great camping spots near the lake so you can revel in the fall beauty a little longer.

Nestled in the San Bernardino Mountains, Green Valley Lake is a secluded hidden gem. At a higher elevation and far less crowded than neighboring Lake Arrowhead or Big Bear Lake (also stunning in the fall!), this picturesque spot is enchanting surrounded by bright shades of yellow, gold, and red. Need To Know: The Sespe River Trail is 30 miles out and back, and it is considered a challenging hike.
This may not be the most accessible fall foliage spot, but it is one of the coolest for those in the know (and who are up for the challenge). In an otherwise arid canyon in the Sespe Wilderness is a wild creek and natural hot springs. Along the water is a riparian outcropping of beautiful sycamore and cottonwood trees that turn bright yellow and gold toward the very end of the fall season. It is truly a unique sight to see.

Peltzer Pumpkin Farm is a family-owned and operated farm offering much more than great pumpkins. When you make a trip to Live Oak Canyon Pumpkin Patch, picking the perfect pumpkin from a massive selection is just the beginning. Lavender festivals are a beautiful summer tradition, but at the end of summer and well into the fall, this lavender farm hosts the enchanting Lavender Nights. The fragrant purple blooms are long gone but the fields and trees become a magical wonderland illuminated by nearly half a million twinkling lights. Stroll through the rows of lavender and the century-old olive grove. There are lawn games, gorgeous photo opportunities, lavender-infused beverages and sweets, and delicious organic dinner items at the food court and bar - plus a delightful marketplace to shop for unique goods. The atmosphere is complimented by live musical performances every night.
The annual JazzTrax Festival is a spectacular reason to escape to Catalina Island for a weekend. A total of 30 smooth jazz stars will grace the stage of the magnificent ballroom at the Avalon Casino over the course of two weekends in October - a tradition that has continued since 1987. Whichever weekend you attend, consider arriving in time for Thursday’s Unplugged Under the Stars at the Descanso Beach Club. This annual fall event is one every music lover should experience at least once.

Visiting one of our beautiful botanical gardens is an excellent way to soak in some vibrant fall color, and one of our absolute favorites is Descanso Gardens. Many of the trees change colors with the cooler weather - especially later in the season - and the gardens are populated with beautiful birds, butterflies, turtles, Mallard ducks, lizards, cottontail rabbits, and adorable mule deer. There are many seasonal flowers blooming in fall as well, adding to the color. Admission tickets are quite reasonable ($15 for adults at the time of writing) and Descanso Gardens offers Free Tuesday tickets for the third Tuesday of every month.

Need To Know: There is paved parking at the trailhead. The preserve is over 900 acres and includes a botanical garden and Children's Discovery Center.
