There’s no doubt that the hiking trails in Northern California are absolutely magical. You will find trails that take you through Redwood forests, next to the ocean, high above cities, and more. While technically a road, the Cal Barrel Road in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park in Northern California is used more for hiking than driving. It features thick forests, beautiful views, and lots of peace and quiet. This is definitely a little-known trail in Northern California that is unexpectedly magical.

The Cal Barrel Road is a narrow road found in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. While this road is technically drivable, it is rarely used and quite small, making it more popular for hikers than drivers. You’ll find this trail just off of Newton B Drury Parkway.

This is a 3.6-mile out-and-back hike that is quite easy. If you complete the trail in its entirety, you will climb nearly 1,000 feet in elevation. However, the gravel and dirt road makes the trek quite pleasant.

This road is also a great path for the entire family, including your favorite furry friend. In fact, this is one of the few areas in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park where dogs are allowed.

Cal Barrel Road in Northern California takes you through a thick forest of Redwood Trees. You will feel far away from the world as all you can see are massive trees and green shrubbery.

Plus, as you walk along the gravel and dirt road, you'll notice it is covered in pine needles. This makes it feel more like a hiking trail than a road, and you'll feel even more tucked away and in a magical setting.

Along the way, you’ll find some incredible natural features that range from large and colorful mushrooms …

… to trees so large and hollowed that you can sit inside.

Don’t be surprised if you don’t see another person on this trail. This is the perfect place to get away from the crowds, find some peace and quiet, and immerse yourself in nature. Cal Barrel Road is not only magical, but it is truly a hidden gem.

Although, while you may not see another person, don’t be surprised if you run into some wildlife.

You will feel like you have the entire forest to yourself on the unexpectedly magical and lesser-known Cal Barrel Road in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. It is one area that you'll love exploring.

On this hike, you will pass several hiking trails that connect with others in the state park. While quite beautiful, they are also more popular, and you will likely pass many other hikers on the way.
