Everyone talks about Golden Gate Park, but what about its smaller sibling on the opposite side of the city? Established in 1927 and named after the "Grandfather of Golden Gate Park," John McLaren Park is San Francisco’s second largest green space. It has long been a hidden gem, and recently it's gone through a bit of a renovation, making it an even more attractive urban playground. Here’s why this underrated park just might be one of the most beautiful places in San Francisco.
1. It has some of the best views in the city, of downtown, the Bay, Mount Diablo, Mount Tamalpais, Angel Island, and the Pacific.
2. With 7 miles of walking trails, it’s perfect for an urban hike (or dog walk!).
3. One of those trails is Philosopher’s Way, a 2.7-mile loop with stops along the way in which one can muse over quotes, historical facts, and interesting park info. And there’s even a labyrinth.
4. There are also open tracks for mountain biking — and there’s rarely anyone around to get in your way.
5. If you prefer swinging a club, head over to the Gleneagles Golf Course for a quick 9 holes, or try your feet at “footgolf.”
6. If that’s not enough activity, you can take a leisurely jog around McNab Lake.
7. Or immerse yourself in a redwood grove… right smack dab in the middle of the city.
8. You can even catch a show at the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater. True Deadheads will definitely want to be there for Jerry Day.
Have you made it to McLaren Park yet? What do you think is the most underrated park in San Francisco? There are over 220 of 'em, after all!
