Named after the famed author, Stevenson actually wrote about his experience in this unique region in his book "Silverado Squatters." After visiting the park for yourself, you'll easily see why the area made such an impression on him.
Loaded with evergreen forests, canyons, and endless rock formations, the landscape is truly unlike any other. In fact, the rocks that form the park's Mount St. Helena and the Palisades are volcanic in nature and are believed to have been formed in between 2.6 to 8 million years ago!
The area's rough and rocky terrain have made it a popular place for rock climbing but there are numerous hiking trails as well that are perfect for taking in the scenery. A five-mile hike will take you straight to the top of Mt. St. Helena where you can view the Bay Area and even Mt. Shasta on a clear day.
If you're up for a more rugged adventure, the trails that head southeast along the Palisades are a great option. Although they require a little more effort to traverse, they also boast the best views of the park's globally unique rock formations.

Sounds pretty dreamy to me. If hiking in Southern California is also one of your hobbies, then might I suggest a beautiful stunner in Joshua Tree National Park just over three miles and moderately challenging. The Fortynine Palms Oasis Trail is a beauty in the desert, with some incredible highlights and a cool oasis at the end.

With an elevation change of over 600 feet, this desert hike has a bit of a kick to it, so prepare accordingly. It's rated as moderately challenging due to its rocky terrain, sun exposure, and occasional steep sections, but it’s well-marked and accessible. Just make sure to pack enough water, sunscreen, and the right footwear.
This trail begins with a steady ascent over a series of rocky hills. The path is surrounded by classic Joshua Tree scenery, including cholla cacti, barrel cacti, and views of desert mountains. While there isn’t much shade along the way, the higher vantage points provide sweeping views of the desert landscape, adding to the experience.
At the end of the trail lies the Fortynine Palms Oasis, a natural oasis fed by underground springs and dotted with fan palms. It’s a striking sight in the middle of the desert, with lush greenery contrasting with the dry surroundings. The oasis has pools of water (though they may be dry depending on the season), and it’s a fantastic spot for photos and relaxation. Many hikers find it a refreshing place to rest before making the return journey.
The best times to hike are fall through spring, as summer temperatures can soar to dangerous levels. You'll want to plan your trip accordingly, not just based on the seasons, but also around the sun since there is minimal shade. Early morning or late afternoon is ideal, especially in warmer months, to avoid the midday sun.
Wildlife watching is an option here as you'll likely come across a few desert-dwellers on your journey. Keep an eye out for desert wildlife, such as lizards, birds, and the occasional bighorn sheep, particularly around the oasis. It's a gathering spot for hydration!
As always, make sure to stick to the trail since you'll be surrounded by a sensitive ecosystem, and follow the Leave No Trace principles.

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L.
