Southern California has no shortage of amazing places, but there's one in particular that's unique to this part of the state. Check out Palomar Mountain in the Cleveland National Forest.
Palomar Mountain is an oasis in San Diego County. Its forests of pine and cedars cover the mountain, providing shade, and the elevation of 6,142 feet gives this special place a unique atmosphere.
The forest on Palomar Mountain gets more than 30 inches of rainfall annually, making this one of the most lush, green places in Southern California.
A hike along the Lower Doane Valley Trail provides plenty of shade while you walk along a carpet of ferns and other ground cover not typically found in this part of California.
Because of the high elevation here, Palomar Mountain even gets snow most winters.
Doane Pond is a pretty spot for a picnic. Drop a line and see if you can catch one of the trout found here.
A visit to the Palomar Observatory is a must while you're on the mountain. Its Hale telescope was once the world's largest, and it provides stunning views of the heavens.
Hike the Boucher Trail, which takes you to Boucher Lookout Tower and Observation Point.
