Winding underneath some of the tallest trees in the world, this accessible hike in NorCal should be on everybody's bucket list.
Formerly known as the Prairie Creek Trail, the Karl Knapp Trail is a fully ADA-accessible hiking trail in Prairie Creek State Park in NorCal.
The Karl Knapp Trail is a flat, 2.5-mile loop that leads hikers alongside a babbling creek and under some of the tallest redwood trees in the world. It's short, easy, and jam-packed with mind-blowing beauty every step of the way.
Hikers are encouraged to grab a free Prairie Creek State Park brochure from any of the park's visitor centers before beginning the hike. Many other hiking trails branch off from this loop (though they may not be ADA-accessible), so you can stretch your adventure even further if you so desire.
You'll start your journey next to the Prairie Creek Visitor Center. Heading north, you'll cross Prairie Creek and trek across footbridges on the way to "Big Tree." If you happen to visit during autumn, keep an eye out for spawning Coho salmon in the creek!
After about a mile, the trail crosses Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway and passes Big Tree Wayside. Estimated to be more than 1,500 years old, Big Tree is one of the park's grandest sights, measuring 68-feet around and nearly 300 feet tall.
After passing Big Tree, the trail continues south on the Foothill Trail. In its entirety, the hike boasts just 99-feet of elevation change with a typical grade of 3%, making it ideal for hikers of all abilities and ages.
Everybody can and should enjoy the beauty of one of Northern California's most spectacular redwood groves.
