This year marks the 90th anniversary of the opening of Castle Crags State Park, a natural gem in Northern California. Located in Shasta County, this Northern California state park is home to the iconic “crag” rock formation, and has a variety of scenic places to explore. What better time to visit Castle Crags than now, as it approaches a century of operation?
In 1934, California purchased land that became the beginnings of Castle Crags State Park.
With elevations ranging from 2,000 to 6,500 feet, and 28 miles of trails, this park is one you don’t want to miss.
While the park is 90 years old, the rock formations are much older.
These fascinating granite formations date back over 160 million years.
The park holds deep historical importance for various Native American peoples.
Among them, the Okwanuchu Shasta people regarded the crags with profound sacredness. According to their spiritual beliefs, these colossal granite formations were believed to be inhabited by spirits.
Located west of Interstate 5 in Shasta County, the park has many activities, such as camping, fishing, hiking, birding, and more!
Castle Crags State Park welcomes visitors year-round for camping and day use, although the park might be closed if there is severe winter weather.
For those seeking accommodation, the park offers campgrounds. The Main Campground is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Campsites are typically readily available from October through April, but available any other time of year if you make a reservation far in advance.
Temperatures in the park vary greatly throughout the year.
Summers are hot (around 90 degrees during the day), and winters are very cold, dropping to the 20s in the winter. Depending on when you plan to visit, be sure to dress accordingly.
Castle Crags State Park is 10 minutes from the quiet and lovely town of Dunsmuir and 20 minutes from the town of Mount Shasta.
If camping is not your thing, stay in one of the beautiful rentals in Dunsmuir and dine at this incredible restaurant at the base of Mount Shasta.
Whether engaging in outdoor activities, or simply enjoying the scenic beauty, Castle Crags State Park remains a fun Northern California state park.
