I don’t think a lot of locals, even life-long residents, realize how many lakes we have in Southern California, from alpine lakes up in the mountains to local man-made reservoirs, and lots of water bodies in between. Some are quite popular for camping and watersports, while others are relatively unknown. One pretty little lake in Van Nuys, CA, is a popular spot with locals but otherwise quite a hidden gem. Sitting quietly in a local neighborhood park, it offers a surprising array of recreational activities.
Lake Balboa is a small, scenic man-made lake at Anthony C. Beilenson Park in Van Nuys and is a perfectly tranquil setting to spend a relaxing day outdoors, especially in the mornings and weekdays (it can get a bit busy with locals on weekends.)
The lake area features vibrant greenery, trees, a waterfall sheltered benches, walking and biking paths, barbecue pits, a playground, tables, and more. Both open picnic tables and reservable picnic shelters for groups are available.
Take a relaxing stroll around the lake on the paved paths any time of year (though the park is subject to closure during especially rainy periods.)
The trees around the lake are always lovely but especially so In the spring when they are full of colorful blooms, just adding to the natural beauty and serenity of the park.
Ducks, swans, egrets, herons, pelicans, and other birds can be observed here. Visitors love sitting around the lake watching them wade along the shore or gracefully glide along the water’s surface.
Bicycles, surreys, tandem bikes, and more can also be rented for a fun way to explore the park and get a bit of a workout as well.
The lake is stocked with fish and locals often come to cast their reels in the water. Keep in mind a fishing license is required for anyone 16 years of age or older.
Swimming is not allowed but you can still get out on the water! Wheel Fun Rentals offers adorable swan pedal boat rentals with a canopy to keep the sun off in hot weather. Private boats are also allowed (no motors) and there is a boat launch for guest use.
Ready for a fun and relaxing day at the lake? Pack a great picnic and head to Lake Balboa! You can find more information on the park, lake, rentals, etc. on the LA Parks website.
