This one is a favorite around here. The good thing is you'll get a bit of exercise hiking down the wooden stairs to the black sands below. I do need to warn you: some who go here believe clothing is optional.
There's a spot you need to find: Batteries to Bluffs Trail, which will take you right to this gem of sandy serenity. It's not that long of a hike -- only .03 miles but the golden arches that stand tall when you arrive make it more than worth it.
A great place with a sheltered cove for the kids to play. This beach in between Pacifica and Montara and about 18 miles south of San Francisco. Bring the whole gang. This is the place!
This is a really unique beach that pleases lots of folks. Fishermen love this secret spot for the different fish they catch; hikers love to take the Kortum Trail along the bluff to views and other beaches beyond this one. You'll love this place.
This is one of the favorite intimate beaches around. Tucked away, it's got bbq's and picnic tables and even outdoor showers. The view is pretty lovely, too!
There's a little known beach tucked beneath the San Rafael Bridge. This spot is a favorite of dog lovers because the beach is dog-friendly. So, bring Fido!
Sure, we know this one is a little more known, but we had to include it. Why? Because there's still a whole lot of you out there who have yet to come here. Bring your friends and start nature's treasure hunt. Once a tragic story of insensitive polluters, the ocean had a few tricks up her sleeve. She tumbled and restored the glass into something of value. Well played, Pacific. Well played.
This beach is a great place to watch the waves roll in. This is also the place surfers enjoy catching a few waves, too. Like all the rest of the secluded beaches, make sure to look around. Lots of folks like to think of wearing clothing as optional, but the parks and rec department frowns on that. Which means please bring your clothes.
This lovely little cove beach is a wonderful place to enjoy a day of sun and surf. Just a little outside of Trinidad, the views are some of the prettiest around.
10. Martin's Beach, 25 Martins Beach Rd. Half Moon Bay
This is a beach that you won't find a lot of tourists at, really only locals. Parking does cost $10 but it's a beach that gives you lots of space and seclusion. After all, isn't that worth it!?
You can see the Siskiyou Mountains from this beach. Not to mention Oregon is in view, along with the seasonal whale that's spotted more and more often lately.

Generally, leaves start to change in the eastern part of SoCal as early as mid-September and peak around mid-October, with the season lasting well into November as you go farther west. Here are a few unexpectedly beautiful, and somewhat lesser-known, places to do a little leaf-peeping.

Need To Know: A Big Pines Parking Pass is required. Passes are $10/per day at Jackson Lake and can be purchased on-site.
Whether you choose to drive, hike, or bike to Jackson Lake, you’ll find a lesser-known fall wonderland and a gorgeous spot to enjoy a seasonal picnic. The landscape surrounding the small lake puts on a simply beautiful display this time of year and it is less than two hours from Los Angeles. There are also great camping spots near the lake so you can revel in the fall beauty a little longer.
Wow Factor: A crystal clear lake and a scenic road reminiscent of Vermont
Need To Know: There is no fee to visit the lake. Mid to late-October usually has the most vibrant foliage.

Nestled in the San Bernardino Mountains, Green Valley Lake is a secluded hidden gem. At a higher elevation and far less crowded than neighboring Lake Arrowhead or Big Bear Lake (also stunning in the fall!), this picturesque spot is enchanting surrounded by bright shades of yellow, gold, and red. The tiny town offers lots of activities to truly enjoy the area’s natural beauty including hiking, biking, and horseback riding, as well as picnic tables and a playground for the kids. You can follow a 5-mile loop around the lake’s shoreline and even bring your fur-baby along for the adventure. The scenic Green Valley Lake Road has even been compared to Vermont in the fall!

Need To Know: The Sespe River Trail is 30 miles out and back, and it is considered a challenging hike.
This may not be the most accessible fall foliage spot, but it is one of the coolest for those in the know (and who are up for the challenge). In an otherwise arid canyon in the Sespe Wilderness is a wild creek and natural hot springs. Along the water is a riparian outcropping of beautiful sycamore and cottonwood trees that turn bright yellow and gold toward the very end of the fall season. It is truly a unique sight to see.

Need To Know: The towns in Santa Barbara wine country are close together and easily accessible from Highway 100 or Highway 154 north of Santa Barbara.

Peltzer Pumpkin Farm is a family-owned and operated farm offering much more than great pumpkins. Families can enjoy an entire day of fun with train and pony rides, a petting zoo, panning for gems, mini John Deere carts, face painting, and carnival games. When you make a trip to Live Oak Canyon Pumpkin Patch, picking the perfect pumpkin from a massive selection is just the beginning. Visit on the weekend to join the fun at the Fall Harvest Festival which offers a host of activities including arts and crafts, festival games, Farmer Golf, and the famous pumpkin canon. While at the farm, stop by the Produce Market Stand for fresh produce, fall decor, and more, and grab a bite at The Tanaka Grill.

Held right on the waterfront in the charming European-inspired Lake Arrowhead Village, the location is as beautiful as this German-themed event is lively. Lavender festivals are a beautiful summer tradition, but at the end of summer and well into the fall, this lavender farm hosts the enchanting Lavender Nights. The fragrant purple blooms are long gone but the fields and trees become a magical wonderland illuminated by nearly half a million twinkling lights. Stroll through the rows of lavender and the century-old olive grove. There are lawn games, gorgeous photo opportunities, lavender-infused beverages and sweets, and delicious organic dinner items at the food court and bar - plus a delightful marketplace to shop for unique goods. The atmosphere is complimented by live musical performances every night.
The annual JazzTrax Festival is a spectacular reason to escape to Catalina Island for a weekend. A total of 30 smooth jazz stars will grace the stage of the magnificent ballroom at the Avalon Casino over the course of two weekends in October - a tradition that has continued since 1987. Whichever weekend you attend, consider arriving in time for Thursday’s Unplugged Under the Stars at the Descanso Beach Club. This annual fall event is one every music lover should experience at least once.

Free & Cheap Southern California Fall Activities
Enjoying a fun and wonder-filled fall season doesn’t have to cost a fortune. There are some fantastic Southern California fall activities that are quite affordable, or even free! Here are a few of our favorites:

Need To Know: Free Tuesday tickets are released in limited quantities on the first business day of the month at 10 a.m.
Visiting one of our beautiful botanical gardens is an excellent way to soak in some vibrant fall color, and one of our absolute favorites is Descanso Gardens. Many of the trees change colors with the cooler weather - especially later in the season - and the gardens are populated with beautiful birds, butterflies, turtles, Mallard ducks, lizards, cottontail rabbits, and adorable mule deer. There are many seasonal flowers blooming in fall as well, adding to the color. Admission tickets are quite reasonable ($15 for adults at the time of writing) and Descanso Gardens offers Free Tuesday tickets for the third Tuesday of every month.
Wow Factor: Some of the state’s best fall foliage, and an easy trek!
Need To Know: There is paved parking at the trailhead. The preserve is over 900 acres and includes a botanical garden and Children's Discovery Center.

Oak Glen is one of the places in Southern California where it truly feels like fall and the easy 1.8-mile Oak Glen Preserve Trail takes you through some of the prettiest fall foliage. Santa Barbara County is the third largest avocado producer on the continent, so what better inspiration for a fun fall weekend on the coast? The three-day California Avocado Festival in Carpinteria is all about “Peace, Love & Guacamole,” and music! It has grown into the state’s largest free music festival featuring 60 incredible bands on multiple stages, family fun, and of course food.
