Southern California is known for a lot of very cool things, and the natural formations you can find in the desert is definitely one of them! The Lava Tube Trail will take you on a trail through the Mojave Desert, where you can see these interesting rock formations up close. Grab a friend, your hiking boots, and plenty of water, and go explore them for yourself!
There’s an incredible place in the middle of the Mojave Desert, right off Interstate 15.
There are thirty-two conical volcanoes rising right up out of the horizon. Lava flowed through these little volcanoes nearly 10,000 years ago.
There’s a short, half-mile trail that gives you access right in one of the lava tubes.
This is a beautiful, easy trail to explore. You’ll pass through stunning scenery and local wildflowers.
You’ll be climbing into the lava rock formation via a steel ladder.
Bring sturdy, non-slip shoes to navigate this area. You’ll want to watch your step over the loose rock and on the metal steps.
The entrance is right through the roof of the cave.
The entire elevation gain is only 62 feet, and most of that is getting into and out of the lava tube. It’s a straightforward hike, but almost entirely in the sun, so bring a hat and plenty of water.
This is a rare opportunity to see how the river of lava looked underground!
Bring your camera, because this is one scene you’ll want to capture. It’s a unique spot to see the lava flows up close and personal.
If you arrive around noon, you’ll have some pretty spectacular sunlight views.
The road to get to the lava caves can be a little rough, so be prepared for some large hills and bumps. It can be done in a regular car, but it's recommended that you drive at a slower speed.
This amazing trail is accessible all year long.
