It requires a slight detour to find it, but once you do, you'll be blown away by the beauty that it has to offer. One of the most scenic spots in Redwood National and State Parks, High Bluff Overlook is most definitely worth the detour when you feel like taking in the Northern California's coast stunning beauty.
The overlook is about a 15-minute detour off of Highway 101 just west of Klamath. You'll find the overlook's parking area along a spur road on the western side of the Coastal Loop Drive. You can take the Klamath Beach Road exit to get to the Coastal Loop Drive.
Prepare for a trek on a narrow, winding road. Vehicles of most sizes can reach the overlook, but be aware that if you have an RV or are towing a trailer that you may not be able to complete the entire Coastal Loop Drive. However, we promise the views are worth the drive (and the patience.)
Upon arriving at the overlook, you'll find yourself at the perfect vantage point for viewing the rugged coastline. On a clear day, you'll be treated to a sweeping view of crashing waves, hidden coves, secluded beaches, and awe-inspiring sunsets.
A small interpretive exhibit contains information about the area's geology. This is a great spot for viewing wildlife, so bring your binoculars! Keep your eyes peeled for eagles and peregrine falcons. If the season is right, you may even spot gray whales hiding between the waves below.
There's also a small park with picnic tables, grills, and restrooms. Pack a picnic and make a day of it at this secluded oasis. After lunch, you can take a stroll along the short hiking trail that leads to a lower overlook for even better views of the rocky cliffside.

Generally, leaves start to change in the eastern part of SoCal as early as mid-September and peak around mid-October, with the season lasting well into November as you go farther west. Here are a few unexpectedly beautiful, and somewhat lesser-known, places to do a little leaf-peeping.

Need To Know: A Big Pines Parking Pass is required. Passes are $10/per day at Jackson Lake and can be purchased on-site.
Whether you choose to drive, hike, or bike to Jackson Lake, you’ll find a lesser-known fall wonderland and a gorgeous spot to enjoy a seasonal picnic. The landscape surrounding the small lake puts on a simply beautiful display this time of year and it is less than two hours from Los Angeles. There are also great camping spots near the lake so you can revel in the fall beauty a little longer.
Wow Factor: A crystal clear lake and a scenic road reminiscent of Vermont
Need To Know: There is no fee to visit the lake. Mid to late-October usually has the most vibrant foliage.

Nestled in the San Bernardino Mountains, Green Valley Lake is a secluded hidden gem. At a higher elevation and far less crowded than neighboring Lake Arrowhead or Big Bear Lake (also stunning in the fall!), this picturesque spot is enchanting surrounded by bright shades of yellow, gold, and red. The tiny town offers lots of activities to truly enjoy the area’s natural beauty including hiking, biking, and horseback riding, as well as picnic tables and a playground for the kids. You can follow a 5-mile loop around the lake’s shoreline and even bring your fur-baby along for the adventure. The scenic Green Valley Lake Road has even been compared to Vermont in the fall!

Need To Know: The Sespe River Trail is 30 miles out and back, and it is considered a challenging hike.
This may not be the most accessible fall foliage spot, but it is one of the coolest for those in the know (and who are up for the challenge). In an otherwise arid canyon in the Sespe Wilderness is a wild creek and natural hot springs. Along the water is a riparian outcropping of beautiful sycamore and cottonwood trees that turn bright yellow and gold toward the very end of the fall season. It is truly a unique sight to see.

Peltzer Pumpkin Farm is a family-owned and operated farm offering much more than great pumpkins. Families can enjoy an entire day of fun with train and pony rides, a petting zoo, panning for gems, mini John Deere carts, face painting, and carnival games. When you make a trip to Live Oak Canyon Pumpkin Patch, picking the perfect pumpkin from a massive selection is just the beginning. Meet over 400 friendly animals at SoCal’s largest petting zoo, then wander through a corn maze and flower gardens. Visit on the weekend to join the fun at the Fall Harvest Festival which offers a host of activities including arts and crafts, festival games, Farmer Golf, and the famous pumpkin canon. While at the farm, stop by the Produce Market Stand for fresh produce, fall decor, and more, and grab a bite at The Tanaka Grill.

Held right on the waterfront in the charming European-inspired Lake Arrowhead Village, the location is as beautiful as this German-themed event is lively. Enjoy German bier and wine, food, music, as well as entertaining contests and events like the Kids Musical Chairs, Team Sausage Toss, Choke the Chicken Contests, and several exuberant dance parties.

Need To Know: The festival is open nightly 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., from the end of August through late October. Tickets and on-site parking must be pre-purchased online. Guests under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
Lavender festivals are a beautiful summer tradition, but at the end of summer and well into the fall, this lavender farm hosts the enchanting Lavender Nights. The fragrant purple blooms are long gone but the fields and trees become a magical wonderland illuminated by nearly half a million twinkling lights. Stroll through the rows of lavender and the century-old olive grove. There are lawn games, gorgeous photo opportunities, lavender-infused beverages and sweets, and delicious organic dinner items at the food court and bar - plus a delightful marketplace to shop for unique goods. The atmosphere is complimented by live musical performances every night.
The annual JazzTrax Festival is a spectacular reason to escape to Catalina Island for a weekend. A total of 30 smooth jazz stars will grace the stage of the magnificent ballroom at the Avalon Casino over the course of two weekends in October - a tradition that has continued since 1987. Whichever weekend you attend, consider arriving in time for Thursday’s Unplugged Under the Stars at the Descanso Beach Club. This annual fall event is one every music lover should experience at least once.

Enjoying a fun and wonder-filled fall season doesn’t have to cost a fortune. There are some fantastic Southern California fall activities that are quite affordable, or even free! Here are a few of our favorites:

Visiting one of our beautiful botanical gardens is an excellent way to soak in some vibrant fall color, and one of our absolute favorites is Descanso Gardens. Many of the trees change colors with the cooler weather - especially later in the season - and the gardens are populated with beautiful birds, butterflies, turtles, Mallard ducks, lizards, cottontail rabbits, and adorable mule deer. There are many seasonal flowers blooming in fall as well, adding to the color. Admission tickets are quite reasonable ($15 for adults at the time of writing) and Descanso Gardens offers Free Tuesday tickets for the third Tuesday of every month.

Need To Know: There is paved parking at the trailhead. The preserve is over 900 acres and includes a botanical garden and Children's Discovery Center.

Oak Glen is one of the places in Southern California where it truly feels like fall and the easy 1.8-mile Oak Glen Preserve Trail takes you through some of the prettiest fall foliage. The three-day California Avocado Festival in Carpinteria is all about “Peace, Love & Guacamole,” and music!
