Visiting the beach offers some of the best memories for kids and adults alike. Likely, some of the fondest beach memories include finding those beautiful little shells that wash up along the shore. At Shell Beach, the "shelling" is a bit different, yet no less spectacular. Come along as we explore this hidden gem that is definitely one of the best beaches in Northern California to find seashells.
Shell Beach is one of many different beaches located within Sonoma Coast State Park.
Getting there is easy. Shell Beach sits just off of Highway 1, approximately three miles south of the town of Jenner and four miles north of the town of Carmet.
Once you get to the bluffs, it’s just a short hike down to the beach below.
Before you hike down, take a moment to breathe in the fresh air and take in the scenic beauty. Depending on what time of year you come, you might be able to catch views of migrating gray whales.
Although the name implies that there will be lots of the customary shells found on a shell beach, those found here are more typically left by mollusks.
There are numerous little tide pools here, and when the tide is out, they reveal craggy rocks often covered entirely by mussels. This is one of the things that makes Shell Beach a favorite spot for beachcombers, fishermen, and those interested in marine life research and exploration.
Colorful stones and vibrantly hued starfish are also among the marine life here.
A variety of fish species also inhabit the area, which is also part of the unique biodiversity within the Sonoma Coast State Park boundaries.
The views are spectacular, particularly during sunrise and sunset.
It's important to note that the sea can be particularly rough in this area of Northern California, so keep an eye out for waves crashing to the shore so they don't catch you off guard!
