I don't know about you but I love to explore caves in Southern California. The Gaviota Wind Caves in Southern California are a hidden gem; to get there, you will have to put in the work with a hike, but it is all worth it.
One of three state parks along the Gaviota Coast in Southern California, Gaviota State Park is a real hidden gem for adventure-hungry nature lovers. The park consists of several trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, and you can't go wrong when exploring any of them. However, the trail featured here may be one of the most interesting, as it leads you up a steep hill to a unique rock formation containing several wind caves. After reaching the top, you can pause for a break inside one of the awesome caves.
A unique sandstone formation containing multiple wind caves is located right off U.S. Route 101 in Gaviota State Park. It's a two-mile out-and-back hike to the caves, where you'll enjoy gorgeous views of the SoCal coast and lush green hills.
To find the trail, take the Gaviota Beach Rd exit from the 101 freeway. Keep right upon reaching Gaviota Campground and follow the road uphill. Keep your eyes peeled for a small parking area on the right side of the road where the trail starts.
After departing from the parking area, you'll follow a dirt road for approximately a mile and a half. This first section of the trail is easygoing and pleasant. Prepare yourself, though; the trail ramps up in intensity as you get closer to the caves.
The last section of the trail that goes uphill to the caves is mildly strenuous. It goes straight up the hillside without any switchbacks, so it's quite a workout. However, the view of the caves looming above serves as inspiration to keep going.
Once you reach the base of the sandstone formation, you can start to explore. There is a lower and upper set of wind caves. The lower caves are a bit more intricate and a great place to catch some shade before continuing your adventure. There will not be any Gaviota Wind Caves tours since this is not your traditional touring cave. Instead, you can enjoy exploring at your own pace.
From here, there are several trails that will take you to the top of the caves. Upon reaching the top, you'll be treated to a breathtaking view of the coast and hills below. Be sure to take a moment to enjoy.
