Lake Del Valle is known in the area for its great fishing. Regularly stocked with trout, catfish and small mouthed bass, the weather is always incredible, too.
Rio de los Americanos--is what this river went by before 1846. Today we know this amazing fishing vein as The American River. This guy seems pretty happy with his catch. You know you want one.
Ever considered kayak fishing? This would be a great place to start. Just 3 1/2 miles from Mammoth Lakes is this beauty of a spot. At 8800 feet high, this lake is a sight to behold--not to mention you can fish for crappie, carp and brown trout here.
This photo couldn't be more tempting. To sit in that chair and cast a line is pure heaven on earth. Then expect to hook a few dozen cutthroat trout, and a few more brown and rainbow trout.
This lovely is located in Plumas County. Feel like a little fishing getaway? This is the place. This gorgeous body of water is home to rainbow and brown trout, king salmon, and small mouth bass, along with other species such as catfish and smelt.
The lower Pit River is considered a Blue Ribbon Fishery. Fly fisherman are known to frequent these waters. Looking for some trout? Then you've found the right place.
Rainbow trout are in abundance here. They love their cold water habitat and a tasty meal of crustaceans, insects and small fish. The largest known rainbow trout weighed over 57 pounds and was estimated to be 11 years old.
This lake has 30,000 acres of water surface that's popular with boats and water skiers and still has enough space for the humble fisherman. Spotted bass dominate the lake and reach an average of 8 pounds and the largemouth bass reach 15 pounds in size.
Bass and catfish run wild and free in this monstrous sized lake. What's great about this place is there are lots of hosted events to bring your kids fishing with you. A great family fishing getaway for sure!
The Bay Area has its available getaways for a quick line in the water--Lake Chabot does the trick quite nicely. Trout and catfish are most abundant here among a few others. If you live in Alameda County, then these 317 acres of lake can feed your appetite for a little fishing fun.
You didn't think we'd forget a saltwater fishing spot, did you? Perch, kingfish, rays, shark, flounder, sturgeon, flounder, and sturgeon are just a handful of the fish you can land in this saltwater oasis.
Contra Costa County boasts one of the best fishing spots around. Over 800 acres of surface water where some of the biggest rainbow trout and bass fish can be found. 14 miles of shoreline make for a real pretty view as you take your time reeling your "big one" in.
An L-shaped pier awaits you right along the San Francisco peninsula. What makes this fishing spot so amazing is the sheer number of different fish species you can catch here. If you're looking for flounder, large perch, halibut, pompano or salmon, you won't leave disappointed.

One of the biggest questions this time of year is where and when will we be able to enjoy the best Southern California fall foliage. Generally, leaves start to change in the eastern part of SoCal as early as mid-September and peak around mid-October, with the season lasting well into November as you go farther west. Here are a few unexpectedly beautiful, and somewhat lesser-known, places to do a little leaf-peeping.

Need To Know: A Big Pines Parking Pass is required. Passes are $10/per day at Jackson Lake and can be purchased on-site.
Whether you choose to drive, hike, or bike to Jackson Lake, you’ll find a lesser-known fall wonderland and a gorgeous spot to enjoy a seasonal picnic. The landscape surrounding the small lake puts on a simply beautiful display this time of year and it is less than two hours from Los Angeles. There are also great camping spots near the lake so you can revel in the fall beauty a little longer.
Wow Factor: A crystal clear lake and a scenic road reminiscent of Vermont
Need To Know: There is no fee to visit the lake. Mid to late-October usually has the most vibrant foliage.

Nestled in the San Bernardino Mountains, Green Valley Lake is a secluded hidden gem. At a higher elevation and far less crowded than neighboring Lake Arrowhead or Big Bear Lake (also stunning in the fall!), this picturesque spot is enchanting surrounded by bright shades of yellow, gold, and red. The tiny town offers lots of activities to truly enjoy the area’s natural beauty including hiking, biking, and horseback riding, as well as picnic tables and a playground for the kids. You can follow a 5-mile loop around the lake’s shoreline and even bring your fur-baby along for the adventure. The scenic Green Valley Lake Road has even been compared to Vermont in the fall!

Need To Know: The Sespe River Trail is 30 miles out and back, and it is considered a challenging hike.
This may not be the most accessible fall foliage spot, but it is one of the coolest for those in the know (and who are up for the challenge). In an otherwise arid canyon in the Sespe Wilderness is a wild creek and natural hot springs. Along the water is a riparian outcropping of beautiful sycamore and cottonwood trees that turn bright yellow and gold toward the very end of the fall season. It is truly a unique sight to see.

Need To Know: The towns in Santa Barbara wine country are close together and easily accessible from Highway 100 or Highway 154 north of Santa Barbara.

Peltzer Pumpkin Farm is a family-owned and operated farm offering much more than great pumpkins. Families can enjoy an entire day of fun with train and pony rides, a petting zoo, panning for gems, mini John Deere carts, face painting, and carnival games. When you make a trip to Live Oak Canyon Pumpkin Patch, picking the perfect pumpkin from a massive selection is just the beginning. Meet over 400 friendly animals at SoCal’s largest petting zoo, then wander through a corn maze and flower gardens. Speaking of pumpkin patches, we just have to mention Tanaka Farms, the only farm in Orange County where you can harvest your own pumpkin from the field. On weekdays, enjoy the U-pick fields, wagon rides, a corn maze, and a barnyard educational exhibit. You can pick other veggies, too! Visit on the weekend to join the fun at the Fall Harvest Festival which offers a host of activities including arts and crafts, festival games, Farmer Golf, and the famous pumpkin canon. While at the farm, stop by the Produce Market Stand for fresh produce, fall decor, and more, and grab a bite at The Tanaka Grill.

For a fun event where the whole family is welcome, spend a weekend at Lake Arrowhead Oktoberfest. Held right on the waterfront in the charming European-inspired Lake Arrowhead Village, the location is as beautiful as this German-themed event is lively. Enjoy German bier and wine, food, music, as well as entertaining contests and events like the Kids Musical Chairs, Team Sausage Toss, Choke the Chicken Contests, and several exuberant dance parties.

This annual Harvest Festival is a unique shopping experience that brings together hundreds of artisans showcasing handmade items from jewelry to photography to ceramics, and so much more. You’ll also find a variety of homemade and specialty foods for purchase as well as strolling entertainment and a KidZone play area. If you don’t live near Del Mar, there are three other Harvest locations in Southern California - Ventura, San Mateo, and Pomona.

Need To Know: The festival is open nightly 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., from the end of August through late October. Tickets and on-site parking must be pre-purchased online. Guests under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
Lavender festivals are a beautiful summer tradition, but at the end of summer and well into the fall, this lavender farm hosts the enchanting Lavender Nights. The fragrant purple blooms are long gone but the fields and trees become a magical wonderland illuminated by nearly half a million twinkling lights. Stroll through the rows of lavender and the century-old olive grove. There are lawn games, gorgeous photo opportunities, lavender-infused beverages and sweets, and delicious organic dinner items at the food court and bar - plus a delightful marketplace to shop for unique goods. The atmosphere is complimented by live musical performances every night.
The annual JazzTrax Festival is a spectacular reason to escape to Catalina Island for a weekend. A total of 30 smooth jazz stars will grace the stage of the magnificent ballroom at the Avalon Casino over the course of two weekends in October - a tradition that has continued since 1987. Whichever weekend you attend, consider arriving in time for Thursday’s Unplugged Under the Stars at the Descanso Beach Club. This annual fall event is one every music lover should experience at least once.

Free & Cheap Southern California Fall Activities
Enjoying a fun and wonder-filled fall season doesn’t have to cost a fortune. There are some fantastic Southern California fall activities that are quite affordable, or even free! Here are a few of our favorites:

Need To Know: Free Tuesday tickets are released in limited quantities on the first business day of the month at 10 a.m.
Visiting one of our beautiful botanical gardens is an excellent way to soak in some vibrant fall color, and one of our absolute favorites is Descanso Gardens. Many of the trees change colors with the cooler weather - especially later in the season - and the gardens are populated with beautiful birds, butterflies, turtles, Mallard ducks, lizards, cottontail rabbits, and adorable mule deer. There are many seasonal flowers blooming in fall as well, adding to the color. Admission tickets are quite reasonable ($15 for adults at the time of writing) and Descanso Gardens offers Free Tuesday tickets for the third Tuesday of every month.
Wow Factor: Some of the state’s best fall foliage, and an easy trek!
Need To Know: There is paved parking at the trailhead. The preserve is over 900 acres and includes a botanical garden and Children's Discovery Center.

Oak Glen is one of the places in Southern California where it truly feels like fall and the easy 1.8-mile Oak Glen Preserve Trail takes you through some of the prettiest fall foliage. Santa Barbara County is the third largest avocado producer on the continent, so what better inspiration for a fun fall weekend on the coast? The three-day California Avocado Festival in Carpinteria is all about “Peace, Love & Guacamole,” and music! It has grown into the state’s largest free music festival featuring 60 incredible bands on multiple stages, family fun, and of course food. The California Avocado Festival is a non-profit group and this annual event benefits lots of other non-profit groups as well. Only in California is October a perfect month to party in a beach town!
