There's no better place in the world than Northern California when it comes to fresh dining options, but this one cafe takes the usual farm to table trend a step farther than usual. The delicious meal that you will be served up was grown and prepared right on location! It can't get any fresher than that.
Mustards Grill is located in Napa and is one of the premier farm restaurants in the country. They have been in business for the last 30 years and paved the way for the farm to table trend that is sweeping the country.
Mustards Grill is a community hub and is known for not only their great food, but their impressive wine list. It was started 30 years ago by Cindy Pawlcyn, who owns three restaurants in the Napa area.
Mustards Grill is her flagship location, however, and is known far and wide for the mellow yet sophisticated atmosphere. This little water feature is the perfect example of the playful yet elegant vibe you will find here.
The kitchen pulls ingredients right from the garden out back. Seasonal varieties play a big part on the menu.
The garden
If they can't grow it, the team at Mustard Grill find it from another local farm. 20 percent of the restaurant's produce, however, is sourced from their garden year round.
Guests to the restaurant are encouraged to walk through the veggies and herbs. If you haven't been exposed to farms or gardens much, we highly recommend this. It's amazing to see what fresh, homegrown produce looks like. You might be surprised at how much it differs from your local grocery store.
Mustards Grill was named for the wild mustard flowers that bloom in the vineyards every spring. This plant is more important than you might initially think. It helps to nourish the soil and is an integral part of Napa Valley's wine growing diversity. It also tastes pretty great, either in condiment or lefy form!
When you are first seated, you'll be served warm, fresh bread that is to die for.
You might think from the premise of the restaurant that it caters to vegetarians. On the contrary, they have a fabulous menu for carnivores and are famous for their pork chop, pictured here.
Grilled Chicken Breast Sandwich, if you would rather not get an entree, is probably the best you will have ever tasted. The onion rings are also to die for... get them as a side no matter what you order.
There are, of course the vegetable inspired dishes that are so good that even non vegetarians will want to give it a try. Here is their mushroom and spinach veggie burger.
Don't be surprised to see unique and delightful veggies on the menu, like this one. It's called a Romanesco and is kind of a cross between broccoli and cauliflower. It's as tasty as it is pretty!
The restaurant is not afraid to be creative. While they serve simpler fare and are not too expensive, especially if you go for lunch, they know how to get creative and fancy, too. This is a seafood tostada with yellow tail... wow.
Don't forget to save room for dessert! This is their double butterscotch pot de crème with warm oatmeal chocolate chip cookies.
The dining atmosphere is what is known as California Casual. It's quaint and sophisticated but without being stuffy or pretentious. There's often families and regulars who gather here, and it's usually quite hopping. Be sure to make reservations!
What we love about the interior decor is that you see the same influence from the gardens that really makes the menu stand out. Just look at that lovely bouquet!
