Some hiking trails have it all, like the Eagle Lake Trail in Desolation Wilderness above Lake Tahoe. Boasting sweeping views of Emerald Bay, a waterfall, and a pristine alpine lake at the end, this hike is jam-packed with natural splendor!
Not only does the trail boast non-stop beauty, but it's short and easy, too. At just about 2-miles-long and only 459-feet of elevation gain, it's a great hike for families and hikers of all skill levels. The Eagle Falls/Eagle Lake Trailhead is easily found along Highway 89 next to the parking area.
Be sure to grab a free wilderness permit before setting off. Departing from the Eagle Falls Trailhead, you'll head southwest and into the wilderness. The trail climbs gently before arriving at a set of stone steps along the granite mountainside.
After climbing the steps, you'll soon come across one of the area's most stunning natural features: Eagle Falls. Cascading down the mountainside, the waterfall is absolutely majestic. A lot of hikers choose to turn around here, but you can continue on for a lot more scenic beauty.
Continuing past the waterfall, you'll come across a fork in the trail after about a half-mile. Follow the trail to the right to be led directly to Eagle Lake, a small but pristine alpine lake that rests below North Maggie's Peak.
Since so many hikers tend to turn back at the falls, the lake is typically serene and free of crowds. In the summer, nothing beats taking a quick dip in the lake's cold waters. Otherwise, you could spend hours sitting on the shore and soaking it all in.
After you've spent enough time at the lake, you can simply retrace your steps back to the trailhead. A short hike that most anyone can do, the Eagle Lake Trail makes for a fantastic outing at beautiful Lake Tahoe!

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L. For those of us who have grown up in Southern California, Orange County has always been known for a few major things like Disneyland, incredible beaches, a historic mission, etc... but not waterfalls. So, you may be as surprised as I was to learn that there are waterfalls here, and one of the most amazing is hidden in a secluded canyon that is just begging to be explored. If you are up for a bit of an adventure, this waterfall trail in Lake Elsinore, CA, should be on your hiking bucket list.

The Chiquito Falls Trail is an 8.7-mile loop just outside of Lake Elsinore. Meaning “small” or “tiny” in Spanish, Chiquito aptly describes the waterfall on this trail. Although smaller than other popular falls in SoCal, it - and the surrounding area - is quite beautiful.
You will find a pretty good-sized parking area along Ortega Highway that is also used for a couple of other trails. Just FYI, you’ll need to purchase and display an Adventure Pass or National Parks Pass to explore the area.
This is considered a challenging backcountry trail, one with varied terrain and a rewarding payoff. It is also less crowded than the more popular trails, even those close by.
Hiking this trail involves a pretty good climb and descent, as well as rocky and uneven terrain, so you will want good hiking shoes or boots, and probably trekking poles (we love these lightweight, adjustable-height poles from Backcountry!)
Chiquito Falls is seasonal so it is recommended to come during winter and spring months to really enjoy it. As with most waterfall hikes, you can expect some stream crossings which vary in depth depending on the time of year.
