Our region of the state is loaded with an endless number of amazing hiking trails that are just begging to be taken advantage of. It can be hard to decide which one you’d like to traverse first! Near the top of your list should be this particular hiking trail in Junction City, California. This scenic trail is known for showing off the best of the Trinity Alps Wilderness, and it’s a must for any adventurer. Located within the Trinity Alps Wilderness near Junction City, the Canyon Creek Lakes Trail is a popular adventure for hiking enthusiasts and it isn't hard to see why. This trail boasts some seriously awe-inspiring beauty and it's bound to blow you away.
At a length of 16 miles roundtrip, this hike can be accomplished as one long day hike or it can be split up into an overnight adventure. You'll find the trailhead located off of County Road 401, accessible from Highway 299.
Despite its length, the trail is definitely well-trafficked. The terrain is just too good to pass up. Boasting numerous waterfalls, turquoise swimming pools, lush meadows, and dense forests, this trail has a little bit of everything sprinkled throughout it.
The first notable lake you'll come across is approximately seven miles down the trail. Lower Canyon Creek Lake is a gorgeous alpine lake that is surrounded by rugged mountain peaks. It's also considered a great place to camp if you choose to do an overnight adventure.
Upper Canyon Creek Lake can be found just a mile further down the trail. It sits at the base of Thompson Peak and is surrounded by a valley full of waterfalls and wildlife. Together, the two lakes are utterly beautiful, and you'll be entraced by their tranquil solitude.
It's no wonder hikers love this trail so much. The farther you trek along the trail, the farther away you're led from civilization. Soon, you're totally surrounded by pristine Northern California beauty, and it's downright magical.
The Trinity Alps Wilderness is one of our state's most magnificent areas, and this trail lets you do just that. Keep in mind that since this area is so remote, you should definitely prepare yourself. Stock up with food and water, and keep an eye out for black bears which are known to roam the area.
To get to the Canyon Creek Lakes Trailhead, you'll drive eight miles west on California Highway 299 from Weaverville. Then, you'll turn right onto Canyon Creek Road (County Road 401.) You'll arrive at the trailhead after approximately 14 miles, where you'll find a parking lot and an outhouse.
