This incredible Northern California overlook is well worth the hike to get there! The Caribou Lake Trailhead is bursting with natural beauty! There is a network of scenic trails that wind through the Trinity Alps Wilderness.
The trail system caters to a range of skill levels, from casual day hikers to experienced backpackers. Visitors can choose from a number of routes, each with its own stunning landscapes.
The Caribou Lake Trail is a 19.5-mile out-and-back trail. Hikers will be rewarded with many awe-inspiring vistas and access to several pristine lakes. Perhaps the most incredible vista (and most photographed) is of the stunning Trinity Alps Wilderness mountain range.
From this trail, hikers can get a nearly birds-eye view of the incredible landscape. The trailhead is located near Big Flat Campground, where you’ll find parking.
The best time to hike this trail is June through October.
It’s unlikely you’ll run into other hikers, making this hike a real retreat into nature. Be sure to pack accordingly for this rural and isolated hike. You’ll need extra water, a snack, and layers for the changing temperatures as the elevation changes.
Backpacking enthusiasts will be glad to know that camping is available along this trail. Campers will need to apply for a wilderness permit. These are available at the Shasta Lake and Weaverville ranger stations.
Alternatively, there is a lodge nearby, as well as campgrounds for a more comfortable overnight stay.
As you traverse the trail, you'll be immersed in a wilderness oasis, surrounded by rugged beauty and tranquility. Hikers of this trail say wildlife is plentiful. You have a good chance of seeing deer and chipmunks.
This is a great trail if you’re looking for a challenge and a true wilderness adventure. Some parts of the trail are narrow and next to steep cliffs, so be aware of that if you hike this trail.
The serene lakes along this hike provide a perfect setting for a cool dip.
And the wildflowers in the alpine meadows during the spring and summer months are nothing short of spectacular, painting the landscape with vibrant colors.
