You don't have to be an expert hiker in order to enjoy one of the most awe-inspiring hiking trails in California. The Independence Trail in Nevada City will absolutely enchant you as you traverse the many footbridges.
The trail isn't just famous for its views. It's considered to be the first ADA accessible nature trail in the country. The well-maintained path makes it easy for everybody to enjoy the epic beauty this place has to offer.
The trail is located on the cliff side above the South Fork of the Yuba River. The shaded trail is completely surrounded by dense and lush forestry, making it the perfect trail to accomplish on a hot day.
It isn't long after you set out on the trail that you discover what makes this hike so memorable. Most of the trail is made up by these incredible wooden footbridges.
The view from the bridges is almost too beautiful to be real. It looks like something out of a fairytale! Overall, the trail is approximately three miles (wheelchair accessible for 1.5 miles) and follows a small gradient as you travel along an old mining ditch.
The views can't be beat, but the area also has a history that is sure to fascinate you. The trail utilizes the old Excelsior Canal which was built in the mid 1800s. Its job was to carry high pressure water for hydraulic mining in the area.
Along the trail there are several picnic tables, benches, and overlooks that are perfect for stopping to take in the dramatic scenery.
At the end of the trail you can take advantage of the access point that leads you down to the river. Once at the river you can stake out a private spot to splash around in, or simply enjoy the view.
