The only thing better than one stunning waterfall is two stunning waterfalls, especially when one of those waterfalls is a double waterfall! And that’s exactly what you’ll find on the Neil Compton and Amber Falls Trail in Arkansas. The two-mile trail is not the easiest to navigate; however, once you set eyes on the picturesque cascades that line it, we think you’ll agree the effort is completely worth it.
Make your next waterfall adventure twice as nice with a trek along the Neil Compton and Amber Falls Trail, a scenic two-mile hike that leads to Compton’s Double Falls and Amber Falls.
You will find the trailhead located just off Cave Mountain Road, about a mile past the parking area for Hawksbill Crag and Whitaker Point.
Keep in mind that Cave Mountain Road is somewhat steep and gets pretty muddy after a good rain. A vehicle with 4WD is preferable; however, small cars traverse the road regularly.
You’ll know you’re in the right place when you see a sign that says, “Upper..." (It initially read, "Upper Buffalo Wilderness - Ozark National Forest.”) The trail is directly behind the sign.
During the first segment of the hike, you’ll trek down a bluff until you run into Whitaker Creek and, ultimately, Amber Falls.
The 18-foot Amber Falls in Arkansas is truly stunning. The pool below is equally as alluring, especially on a hot day. Folks rave about this waterfall swimming hole in Arkansas!
When you’re finished viewing Amber Falls, continue downstream and you’ll eventually arrive at the top of Compton’s Double Falls.
The 39-foot double waterfall is absolutely jaw-dropping from above.
Of course, you can always trek down to its base for close-up views.
It should be noted, though, that to reach the base, you’ll have to trek back up the bluff and follow it down to cross the creek. (Parts of the bluff are rather steep and can be slick, so be careful!)
Compton’s Double Falls and Amber Falls may be the highlight of this hike in Arkansas, but they’re not the only waterfalls you’ll see.
Several named and un-named waterfalls line the trail, making for an unforgettably scenic hike.
