Arkansas has a lot of incredible trails, and we're particularly fond of ones that have awesome payoffs. Whether it's a scenic overlook or a magnificent waterfall, a beautiful ending is much appreciated (and looks even better!) after the exhaustion of a long hike. One such trek is the 4.3 mile Richland Falls hike within the Richland Creek Recreation Area in Witt Springs. The hike is rocky with some overgrown areas, but the gorgeous waterfall you'll see at the end is certainly worth it!
The hike to Richland Falls is an out and back trail and it's not very well-marked in some places, so make sure you bring along printed directions to help guide you along!
The trail features several river crossings - a quick dip in the cool water will certainly feel refreshing after all your exploring!
Slippery rocks are dangerous, so bring great walking shoes with a good grip! Rain will make the crossings especially treacherous, so be wary of local weather conditions.
It's certainly a difficult hike, but you'll see so much of Arkansas' famous natural beauty. The trail is very popular with bird watchers.
There's an elevation gain of over 400 feet, making this a moderately difficult hike. Some areas have extremely steep cliffs!
Don't forget to bring along your camera to capture all the natural beauty of the falls. The sound of flowing water is especially sweet after a long hike!
Make sure to check out the route on Alltrails before heading out, and verify that recent weather conditions have been suitable for the hike. Wear safe shoes, watch your footing, and have fun!
