If you love backpacking through the wilderness of Arkansas, then you must hike the Black Fork Mountain Trail near Mena.
Tucked inside the Ouachita National Forest, this 11-mile out-and-back trail is considered a challenging route, so it will be a thrilling experience for expert hikers.
The trailhead is located off Highway 59 in Rich Mountain just over a mile from the Rich Mountain Country Store.
With an elevation gain of 2,263 ft, hiking poles are recommended for this rugged trail.
Be sure to also wear comfortable shoes as you'll encounter large boulders along the way. Bears dwell in the area, however no known attacks have been reported. Let's keep it that way.
This trail isn't well-maintained, so during the warmer months, certain sections will be dense and overgrown with weeds and trees. You'll want to wear long sleeves and pants for the best protection.
Although the trail is steep, rocky, and strenuous, the rewards are oh-so delightful. If you're hiking during the Spring, pretty wildflowers will line the trail, and nature lovers will want to stop and marvel at them.
Additionally, the footbridge at the Ouachita River crossing will make a great backdrop for cool pictures to add to your collection.
Plus, within a mile of the hike, there is a railroad crossing with the prettiest view of the sunset.
Your four-legged friend will love the flowing stream along the trail. It's a great place to stop and rest for a bit.
Although there aren't any towering waterfalls in the area, there are some tiny cascades that are worth admiring.
You'll also encounter a large rock glacier as well as an old homestead and a hiker's shelter. All are interesting spots to explore.
But the picturesque views of Rich Mountain as well as the Ouachita National Forest are the greatest rewards on this remote hike.
The hike is great for a long day trip, but most folks enjoy primitive camping on the mountain.
