On the very southern edge of Arkansas resides a haven for our native animals and birds, not to mention nature lovers too! Overflow Wildlife Refuge is a peaceful nature escape west of Wilmot. The refuge is popular with hunters but outdoor fans of every sort can find something to love in Overflow. Let's take a breath and enjoy the tranquility of this remote refuge:
The Natural State certainly lives up to its name since you can find scenic gems in all four corners and everywhere in between!
One of the more overlooked places is in Southeast Arkansas. South of Sunshine (pop. 800) and near the Louisiana border is the Overflow National Wildlife Refuge.
This mix of Mississippi Alluvial Valley, Delta, and Coastal Plain form a peaceful haven for native wildlife.
The refuge covers nearly 14,000 acres with a variety of biomes that all have their own unique beauty. Most of the refuge is covered in bottomland hardwood with an abundance of willow oak trees.
You may spot the 100+ years old farmland nearby too.
Most of the land alongside Overflow has been farmed for well over a century. The cotton, rice, and soybean fields are vital to Arkansas' agriculture but we're happy the refuge protects the remaining forest. The "delta snow" is still a sight to see!
Overland Wildlife Refuge offers a variety of ways to reconnect with nature.
The refuge has multiple hiking trails and endless chances to photograph the native wildlife. You may capture otters, butterflies, or even alligators on camera.
The main draw to Overflow is the hunting.
This is one of the best places for duck hunting in the state! Waterfowl, squirrel, rabbit, woodcock, raccoon, opossum, bobwhite quail, deer, and turkey are all roaming around Overflow. You can read through the regulations here.
The birding here doesn't just involve duck hunting. Wildlife watchers will be in for a treat, too!
Birders will have an abundance of species to find including painted buntings, pileated woodpeckers, white ibis, black-necked stilts, and bald eagles!
This little corner of calm paradise is perfect for anyone wanting to get away from a busy city.
