Have you detoured off the hidden path lately? To a place less traveled where nature is thriving in all its glory. If you’re yearning for the chance to leave all your worries behind, then you must visit the Flatside Wilderness Area in the Ouachita National Forest. This hidden gem in Arkansas is perfect for all nature enthusiasts.
Tucked away inside the Ouachita National Forest in Perryville is the Flatside Wilderness Area.
The region got its name from Flatside Pinnacle which is a rock outcrop that is approximately 1,460-feet above sea level. And it boasts some of the best sunsets in the Ouachita Forest.
Along with the spectacular sunsets, Flatside is a 9,500-acre sanctuary with lots to explore.
It’s sprinkled with natural flowing creeks, gorgeous cascades, stunning overlooks, mountain peaks, and so much more.
The gorgeous area is one of six wilderness areas in the Ouachitas and it’s a paradise for someone wanting to fully immerse themselves in nature.
There are a series of hiking trails inside the region, which nature lovers will bask in as it will give you multiple options to explore.
The drive to the wilderness area is scenic, but very rocky, so be careful as you travel through the region.
Additionally, there is little to no cell service, so download all maps and do your research before you traverse.
Because there is no cell service, all you’ll hear are the natural rhythms of nature sounds.
As you trek on the hiking trails, you’ll come across multiple flowing streams as well as rocky creeks. Two of which are Cedar Creek and Crystal Prong.
And of course, there are waterfalls in the region as well. Though they’re not as grand as the waterfalls in the Ozarks, the cascades are still gorgeous and worthy of a look.
It will take a bit of bushwhacking, but the Twisted Cascade is worth every step.
Besides the waterfalls, there are also crystal-clear swimming holes to get your feet wet or to cool off on a hot summer day.
The wilderness area can be visited any time of the year, but it’s especially stunning during the fall when the leaves are changing on the pines and hardwood trees.
Best of all, you can see at least five mountain peaks from the region. And all of them are over 1000-feet high. Additionally, on clear days, you’ll glimpse Mount Nebo as well as Mount Magazine off in the distance.
Moreover, the multiple peaks provide lots of overlooks where you’ll love the spectacular panoramic vistas. They’re not easy hikes, but the rugged peaks yield generous rewards.
Be sure you have your camera in hand to capture the stunning sites that behold.
Unfortunately, some of the trails are not well marked, after all, it is a very secluded wilderness area.
So, bring food and water and plan to spend a day exploring the region as you’ll be amazed at all that you will discover.
