You don’t have to go outside the borders of the Natural State to find a one-of-a-kind waterfall. There’s an absolutely stunning waterfall hiding up in the Ozarks that isn’t quite like any of the other falls in Arkansas. It falls from a painted bluff, and though it’s a bit of a hike to get up there, it’s worth every step you’ll take.

At 250 feet, Hemmed-In-Hollow Falls is the tallest waterfall between Appalachia and the Rockies. The waterfall is surrounded by incredible, huge bluffs.
Though the bluffs are gorgeous all the time, dry spells and the heavy winds at that height will make the waterfall extremely hard to see if you don’t go after a decent rain. If you want to see the falls at their full glory, wait until after a bout of heavy rain.

Located in the Ponca Wilderness Area, there are a few different trailheads you can use to find the falls. The easiest way to get there is by floating the Buffalo River, where it’s just a half mile from the river trailhead. What these methods of visiting the falls have in common is the difficulty of the return journey, which is steep and difficult.
There really isn’t anywhere quite like Hemmed-in-Hollow Falls, because it’s the tallest waterfall of the central highlands, but also because it’s just that incredibly beautiful.
