When it comes to the Moonshiners Cave Trail, it’s hard to say which is better – the journey or the destination. The trail is under a mile, which means the journey is an easy one. As far as the destination goes, it’s just as alluring. The trail comes to an end at a cave with a colorful past and a waterfall!
Moonshiners Cave Trail is in Winslow. Most people think it’s part of Devil’s Den State Park, but it’s actually nestled in the forest surrounding the park.
There’s a parking area just across the street from the park’s entrance sign. From the parking lot, it’s a short, 100-yard walk to the trailhead.
Since the trail isn’t part of the park, it’s not marked with any signage. However, the trail follows what looks like a dried up creek bed, so it’s pretty easy to navigate.
An out-and-back trail, Moonshiners Cave Trail is just 0.8 miles long, which means it doesn’t take long to get to the trail’s namesake, Moonshiners Cave.
The cave is pretty large and includes a waterfall. The land surrounding the cave and fall is nice and flat, making it easy to explore both.
Not surprisingly, the cave has been attracting nature lovers and history buffs for years. What is surprising, though, is that very little is known about the cave.
It’s said that the cave was first used by a pioneer family around 1905. The family closed in the cave and used it to store canned vegetables.
Later on, the cave was used by bootleggers to make moonshine. Legends confirm this notion, although, there isn’t any evidence of its validity.
Moonshiners Cave Trail is a great trek year-round. However, it’s best to go after a good rainfall, which is when the waterfall is flowing at its best.
Though short, Moonshiners Cave Trail is rated as moderate because the entire return trip (from the cave/fall back to the parking lot) is up hill. Also, the terrain is pretty rocky, so make sure to wear sturdy hiking boots or shoes.
