Big water parks are fun, but we Arkansans tend to enjoy a more naturally setting. The naturally spring-fed pool at the Charlton Recreation Area is the perfect summer swim spot. Let's take a dip in this perfectly-chilly getaway.
For today's summer vacation, let's take a drive to the Ouachita National Forest.
Just driving through the tunnel of trees is a relaxing adventure in itself.
Our destination is about 20 miles west of Hot Springs on U.S. 270.
The Charlton Recreation Area is about halfway between Mt. Ida and Royal. For directions to the area, use this map.
The first thing you'll want to do is head to the swimming area.
Setting up camp is important but it's hard to resist one of the more unique swimming holes in Arkansas.
Walnut Creek is just about the perfect swim spot in the state.
The natural perfection of the swimming hole, enhanced with accessibility creates a beloved spot the whole family with enjoy.
The Civilian Conservation Corps built the native stone dam in 1935.
They also built the rustic bathhouse in the area.
The fantastically chilly pool is a spring-fed paradise.
Sit on the sideline to fish or cool off in a tube.
Wading in the creek is a great way to catch a glimpse of some water critters.
Young explorers will enjoy spotting fish and reptiles in the clear waters.
The area has 58 campsites, including some alongside the creek.
Some of the sites are primitive, while others include hookups and hot shower access. Camping trailers are also welcomed.
In addition to camping, Charlton also has a fair amount of hiking.
There's the 4.3-mile Charlton Trail that leads to the neighboring Crystal Springs Campground and the Prayer In The Wood Trail, a pleasant .8-mile loop.
No matter if you just spend a couple of hours poolside or make a whole camping trip of it, Charlton Rec Area is a must-visit this summer.
It's just one more fantastic Arkansas adventure.
