Our state has plenty of weird rock formations from the Arkansas Sphinx to the pedestal rocks at King's Bluff. The towering monoliths at Stack Rock Scenic Area seem to take you up, up and away to a different planet entirely. Let's tackle these natural skyscrapers for the rewarding view!
About a stone's throw from Richland Creek Wilderness is another wild trail that looks downright otherworldly.
The Stack Rock Scenic Area is about nine miles north of Richland, near Snowball. The drive to this area is not the easiest so be sure to use the maps here before heading out. Once you've arrived at Stack Rock you'll feel like you're on a different planet!
You'll feel rather small once you've reached the base of the towering formations.
These monoliths have an elevation near 2,000 feet! It's easy to see why this place rivals Sam's Throne for rock climbing adventures. Climbers have plenty of sport and traditional routes to explore and should use this site for more details.
Even if you're not a rock climber there's still ways to reach the top of these natural skyscrapers.
The trail is right under three miles and is an out-and-back trek. It's rated as moderate and not recommended for young hikers. Towards the top of the mountain you'll want to take the path counterclockwise for the easiest scramble.
At the top of the stack you definitely don't want to look down...
Do be careful around those edges!
...which shouldn't be too hard because the panoramic view is spectacular!
The most rewarding part of this trek is the out-of-this-world view. Once you've reached the top, take a well-earned break and drink in the endless scenery.
