The Old Mill is one of the most iconic attractions in Arkansas. This replica 1800s grist mill recently restarted its gorgeous waterfall. The area already felt like a fairy tale dream but the revitalized waterfall is just one more excuse to visit this beautiful inner-city paradise.
The Old Mill has been a treasured Arkansas gem for over 80 years, although it looks like it's been around much longer.
The Old Mill at T.R. Pugh Memorial Park is a replica 1880s water-powered grist mill. The mill was actually constructed in 1933 by a full design team. A sculptor even formed the bricks in order to simulate the iron, wood, and steel features of the mill in concrete. The authentic replica is on the National Register of Historic Places and (most notably) appeared in the opening scene of Gone with the Wind.
This free attraction in North Little Rock looks like it came from a storybook.
The picturesque mill is surrounded in flowers, water features, sculptures and fairy tale footbridges. The mill brings together field trip students, newlyweds for photos, travelers from around the country, and any Arkansan needing a quick nature retreat.
A waterfall feature was recently brought back to life near the mill.
The 50-ft. wall of waterfall is located near the entrance of the mill. The waterfall hasn't been operational for over 70 years due to silt build up and a too-small pump. After closing for a few days in September 2019 the park's crew installed new pipes and a larger pump to return the waterfall to its original wonder.
It may not be a natural waterfall but the gorgeous cascades add a new layer to experiencing the Old Mill.
Numerous visitors have already commented on the peaceful sound brought by the waterfall. The water from the falls flows into the pond that powers the water mill. Thanks to this circulation and silt clean-up, all of the water around the mill is much clearer too.
This charming park was already a dream come true but the waterfall is just one more reason plan a visit soon!
The pictures are beautiful but don't quite capture the dreaminess of this place. The Old Mill should definitely be on your Arkansas bucket list, especially after this waterfall re-opening.
