Fern Gully is a pleasantly tucked away scenic area in the western neck of the Ozark National Forest. Kayakers, climbers, hikers, and just any casual outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy exploring this beautiful area. Let's poke around and see what we can find at Fern Gully.
Pleasantly secluded outside of the tiny community of Fern resides a gorgeous scenic area.
If you head north into Fern you'll pass a church on the right side. Shortly after the church will be an A-frame house to look for, take the next dirt logging road on the right. Continue on the dirt road until it makes a switchback, then take the next road on the right to the campsite and trailhead.
The beauty of Fern Gully is nearly indescribable, but its customization is what makes the area so appealing.
Fern Gully is not just a straightforward hike or waterfall to explore: the area is multifaceted and can accommodate a variety of skill levels.
Fern Gully is great if you're wanting a family-friendly exploration trip.
From the parking area, follow the bluff south to reach the bottom of the valley. Kids will enjoy exploring in-between the massive boulders.
But if you're needing a quiet escape and don't mind a tedious hike, Fern Gully can accommodate that too.
The area does have a 2.9-mile bushwhack for dedicated hikers.
The area is also a favorite for climbers.
The sandstone boulders are a jungle-gym of challenging holds that can tower up to three stories high. Climbers have bolted chains to some of the rocks to create a path through the boulder maze.
The creek that runs through Fern Gully is tranquil in the immediate area but quickly develops into kayaker's paradise.
The creek drops into a steep descent with Class IV and V difficulty. If the creek is flowing well you'll be able to find "The Drop Zone," its a 200-yard-long Class V obstacle course for experienced rafters.
No matter how much adventure you're craving, Fern Gully can be your perfect excursion.
This scenic area is a trip you'll want to take again and again.
