If you're growing tired of the same old summer vacation spots, consider planning a trip to Woods Canyon Lake. This little-known reservoir is just about 30 minutes from Payson and it boasts some of the clearest water in Arizona.
Woods Canyon Lake is nestled in the high-elevation alpine landscape of Rim Country. Just under 30 miles from Payson, this small reservoir is something of a hidden gem.
Deep blue and crystal-clear, the lake has an average depth of about 25 feet.
This makes it an extremely popular fishing spot, with several different species inhabiting the waters.
You can also take an easy hike on the 3.7-mile Woods Canyon Lake Trail.
It's a loop that parallels the water, shaded by pine trees and offering gorgeous panoramic views that stretch far into the distance.
Bright green meadows are reminiscent of scenes from a fairytale.
Kids and pets are welcome on the trail, as it's relatively flat the whole way.
If kayaking is your preferred form of water recreation, the Woods Canyon Lake Store and Marina has plenty for rent.
Canoes, paddle boards, electric trolling motor boats, and peddle boats are also available, and rates vary depending on which craft you choose.
The shop also has fishing poles, camping gear, firewood, ice, hunting/fishing licenses, and groceries.
It boasts one of the largest ice cream selections in Northern Arizona!
So whether you're looking for a day trip or camping expedition, Woods Canyon Lake is the place to be from April thru October.
I mean, c'mon -- you'll be hard-pressed to find a scene this tranquil anywhere else in the area!
