Arizona has an incredibly rich history, and insight into our past is often hiding where we'd least expect to find it. Papago Park, one of the most popular outdoor destinations in the state, is home to the final resting place of Arizona's very first governor, W.P. Hunt. His tomb sits atop a dramatic hill, so you can pay your respects while admiring panoramic vistas of the surrounding desert landscape.
One of the most recognizable places in the Phoenix metro, Papago Park is both a historical relic and an outdoor adventurer's paradise.
The park, which has served as everything from a reservation for indigenous tribes to a POW camp during World War II, is now a popular destination for hiking, fishing, and golfing.
Impossible to miss from anywhere in the park, a pristine white pyramid stands in stark contrast to the surrounding red rock landscape.
If you let curiosity get the best of you, a closer look reveals something quite unexpected: a tomb.
This is not just any tomb; the pyramid harbors the remains of Arizona's very first governor, George W.P. Hunt, who served from 1912-1933.
Affectionately known as "Old Walrus" due to his mustache, bald head, and stout physique, Hunt was well-liked for his outspoken support of both women's suffrage and the abolition of child labor.
Hunt's Tomb, as the structure is now called, is shaped like a pyramid because the Governor was a freemason (the pyramid is the symbol of freemasonry).
Just one year after leaving office, Hunt passed away due to heart failure and was buried in the tomb.
Members of Hunt's family, including his wife and her parents and sisters, have also been laid to rest here.
A signpost located in front of the tomb offers additional details about those buried in this public memorial.
In addition to paying your respects to the late Governor, you can also enjoy sweeping views of the rugged desert terrain from the steep hill upon which the tomb sits.
Several benches offer a place to sit in contemplation and reverence for both nature and those who came before us.
Address: 625 North Galvin Parkway, Phoenix, AZ 85008.
Park hours are sunrise until sunset daily.
