We all know the lore surrounding Jerome, and you can get up-close-and-personal with it on an easy hike through the town cemetery. With a storied past, stunning views, and enough paranormal activity to last a lifetime, this hair-raising adventure is one you’ll never forget.
Meandering through the storied Jerome Cemetery, this 1.4-mile trail is a perfect addition to your spooky season itinerary.
It's accessible to a variety of ages and skill levels, with an elevation gain of under 300 feet, but promises an equally eerie experience for all.
Located at the base of the hill on which Jerome is perched, the cemetery features sweeping panoramas of the city and United Verde Mining operations.
It's estimated that over 400 people are buried here, but you'll only see about 40 gravestones.
Many of the dead were victims of tragic mining accidents, while others succumbed to gunshot wounds -- after all, Jerome is the "wickedest town in the West."
Adding to the eeriness is an unkempt landscape overgrown with crabgrass, shrubbery, and cacti.
You'll encounter a number of fenced graves along the trail, many unmarked.
It's only natural to wonder who these people were, what kind of lives they lead... and whether their spirits still linger on the cemetery grounds. Of the graves with identification, some date as far back as 1897!
Find yourself here after dark, and you just might be in for some paranormal activity.
Ghostly voices floating through the air and disembodied footsteps pounding the pavement are just a snippet of the horrifying happenings we've heard about.
As haunting a scene like this might be, it sure is beautiful.
Since the hike is so short, feel free to spend some time reveling in a silence so deafening, it really can't be found outside of a cemetery. No matter how creeped out you are, these views are simply incredible.
This trail is a history lesson, ghost hunt, and nature walk all-in-one. What better way to spend your day?
